Arsenal made it through to the FA Cup quarter-finals, but it was far from comfortable. Mansfield Town, a League One side sitting just five points above the drop zone, gave the Premier League leaders a real test before two second-half goals saw the Gunners through.
Noni Madueke gave Arsenal the
lead just before the break, curling the ball into the top corner after Gabriel
Martinelli played him in at the edge of the box. Madueke had already tested
Liam Roberts in goal before that, so the opener felt like it was coming.
Mansfield pulled level when a short pass from 16-year-old debutant Marli Salmon was cut out and substitute Will Evans tucked the chance past Kepa Arrizabalaga. From there, Arteta turned to his bench. Eberechi Eze and Jurrien Timber came on, and Eze settled the tie with a powerful strike into the roof of the net on 66 minutes.

Tactical Breakdown
Shape and Setup
Arteta went with a three-man
backline from the start, a setup you do not see from Arsenal all that often. It
was clearly a rotation-based decision, but it created problems early on. The
defensive unit looked unsettled and gave Mansfield too much room to work in.
When Leandro Trossard picked up
an injury, Arteta moved back to the familiar back four. That shift helped
stabilise things and the team looked more structured from that point on.
The Youth Gamble
Starting two 16-year-olds in a
cup tie away at a pumped-up League One ground was a bold call, but Arteta
clearly had faith in both players. Dowman was arguably the best Arsenal player
in the opening half. He dropped into tight spaces, showed no nerves picking the
ball up in dangerous areas and was always looking to push the team forward. The
ankle injury he suffered in December clearly has not held him back.
Salmon had a harder time. His
role was to carry the ball out from defence into midfield, which is a big ask
for anyone making their first start. He showed quality at times, but his
misplaced pass was the moment that let Mansfield back in. These things happen,
and the experience will only help him in the long run.
Mansfield's Pressing
Game
Credit where it is due to
Mansfield. They were not content to sit in and defend. They pushed high,
pressed with energy and created genuine problems for an Arsenal side with
several players below their usual level. Rhys Oates and Tyler Roberts caused
problems in behind and Kepa had to be sharp on more than one occasion.
The equaliser was well-taken by
Evans, but it was built on good tactical work. Mansfield identified that
Arsenal were playing out from the back with less experienced players and went
after it. For the most part, that plan worked.
Eze and Timber Change
the Game
Once Arteta brought Eze and Timber on, the quality difference became more obvious. Eze in particular looked like a player who had been waiting to make his mark. His goal was struck with real authority and killed the game off. With so many key fixtures coming up, having players of that level ready to step off the bench is a real advantage.

game. His 66th minute strike was exactly what Arsenal needed. |
|
Marli Salmon |
Tough debut. His pass led
to the equaliser but he showed enough to suggest he belongs here. |
|
Kepa Arrizabalaga |
Made important saves when
called upon. Solid display in rotation. |
Wider Context and What
Comes Next
This result keeps Arsenal on
course for a possible quadruple, though nobody will be talking about that too
loudly just yet. The Gunners are now into the FA Cup last eight for the first
time since Arteta won the trophy in his debut season back in 2020.
With Declan Rice, Gabriel
Magalhaes and Martin Zubimendi all rested, the squad depth was on full display.
They have huge games coming up: Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League round
of 16 is next on Wednesday, before a Carabao Cup final and several Premier
League battles.
For Mansfield, this is still a decent run. They return to League One action on Tuesday against Reading and will need to refocus quickly with survival still the priority this season.
