Bosnia Beat Qatar to Keep Knockout Dream Alive as Teenager Alajbegovic Shines

Bosnia-Herzegovina kept their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time alive with a 3-1 win over Qatar in Seattle on Wednesday night. 

The result leaves them third in Group B on four points, level with Canada but behind on head-to-head record, meaning they must now wait to see if they finish among the eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups to advance.

18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic was the standout, opening the scoring in the 29th minute with a thunderous right-footed strike from 20 yards that gave Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada no chance. The teenager became the eighth-youngest scorer in World Cup history and the youngest ever for Bosnia.

Five minutes later, Bosnia doubled their lead when Edin Dzeko's volleyed effort deflected off Qatar defender Sultan Al-Brake and crept in past Mahmoud Abunada, with the goalkeeper credited with an own goal.

Dzeko, making his 150th appearance for his country and captaining the side at 40 years old, came close to a third shortly after but struck the post with a low drive.

Qatar gave themselves hope just before half time when captain Hassan Al-Haydos bundled in a cross from Edmilson Jr to make it 2-1, and Pedro Miguel also hit the woodwork before the break. Achmad Afif continued to cause problems early in the second half on the counter, but Bosnia's defence held firm.

Substitute Ermin Mahmic wrapped things up in the 80th minute, scoring for the second successive game after latching onto a loose ball in the Qatar box to restore the two-goal cushion.

It was only Bosnia's second win at a World Cup, their first coming against Iran in their debut tournament appearance in 2014. 

Qatar finished bottom of Group B on one point and are eliminated, also exiting without a win in their second World Cup appearance. 

Earlier on Wednesday, Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo was handed a five-match ban for the tackle that broke the leg of Canada's Ismael Kone in their Group B opener.

Bosnia now face an anxious wait. If they advance as one of the best third-placed teams, they could face either the United States or Germany in the round of 32.
