England Frustrated by Ghana as Qualification Bid Stalls After Goalless Draw

England failed to secure their place in the round of 32 after being held to a goalless draw by Ghana in Foxborough on Wednesday night. 

Thomas Tuchel's side dominated possession throughout but could not find a way past a well-organised Ghana defence, leaving their qualification hopes to be settled in their final group game against Panama.

England came into the match on the back of a 4-2 win over Croatia and needed just one more victory to confirm their spot in the knockout stage. Instead, they were frustrated for 90 minutes by a Ghana side that defended deep, stayed compact, and caused problems on the counter.

The first half was largely uneventful. Declan Rice saw a free kick fly over the bar in the 14th minute, and Noni Madueke was England's busiest player, cutting inside on several occasions without much end product. 

Ghana rarely ventured forward but looked dangerous when they did, sending long balls in behind for Antoine Semenyo and Kwame Williams to chase. Rice picked up a yellow card in the 41st minute, and England went into the break without a single shot on target.

The second half was no better early on. England did not register their first shot on target until the 57th minute, when Anthony Gordon tested the Ghana goalkeeper from outside the box. Tuchel turned to his bench, bringing on Bukayo Saka and Nico O'Reilly to try and change things. Saka, who is being managed carefully due to an Achilles issue, forced a fine save from goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, and O'Reilly headed against the bar. Marc Guehi also had a header cleared off the line.

Ghana had their own moment when substitute Prince Ado raced in behind and was brought down by Jordan Pickford outside the box, earning a free kick that VAR confirmed. It was a reminder that England were not entirely in control.

Jude Bellingham became the youngest player in England's history to reach 50 caps during the match, though the milestone was hard to celebrate given the result. Harry Kane also ended the night without adding to his World Cup tally.

England stay top of Group L but must now beat Panama in their final group game to guarantee qualification. Ghana, who beat Panama 1-0 in their opener, have four points and remain very much in contention.
