Saibari Strikes Early as Morocco Beat Scotland 1-0 at World Cup

Morocco beat Scotland 1-0 in Foxborough on Saturday, leaving Steve Clarke's side with work to do if they want to reach the World Cup knockout stage.

PSV midfielder Ismael Saibari put Morocco ahead after just 70 seconds, the quickest goal Scotland have conceded at a World Cup since their return to the tournament after a 28-year absence. A long ball from Brahim Diaz caught Scotland's defense flat-footed, and Saibari took a touch before firing past goalkeeper Angus Gunn from 14 yards.

Scotland had gone into the game needing only a draw against the sixth-ranked side to all but secure their place in the knockout rounds, following an opening win over Haiti in Group C.

Morocco threatened to add to their lead in a first half they largely controlled. Achraf Hakimi forced a key save from Gunn, Neil El Aynaoui put a shot over the bar, and Bilal El Khannouss curled wide with the goal at his mercy. 

Scotland's best chance of the half came when John McGinn could not quite get on the end of a cross from Andy Robertson.

Clarke had reshuffled his lineup before kickoff, bringing in Nathan Patterson, Kieran Tierney and Ryan Christie for Aaron Hickey, Ben Doak and Lawrence Shankland, and switching to a 4-5-1 with Che Adams up front. The changes did little to stop the early setback, but Scotland looked sharper after the break.

The Scots pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half and felt they should have had at least one penalty. Referee Ilgiz Tantashev waved away appeals after El Aynaoui appeared to trip McGinn in the box shortly after halftime, and again in the 81st minute when Scott McTominay went down under a challenge from the same player. In between, Saibari struck the woodwork with a deflected effort, and Gunn produced another big save to deny an El Khannouss header.

Christie also drove a shot over the bar in the 63rd minute during one of Scotland's better spells.

In the 76th minute, fans observed a minute of applause in memory of Donny Strathie, a 76-year-old Scotland supporter who died in Boston earlier in the week.

Despite the late pressure, including chances created by McTominay and substitute Lyndon Dykes, Scotland could not find a way through.

The defeat leaves Scotland needing results to go their way. A draw against Brazil in their final group game in Miami would give them a real chance of reaching the round of 32 for the first time in the nation's history.
