Ten-Man Paraguay Hold On to Shock Turkey 1–0 and Knock Them Out of the World Cup

Paraguay beat Turkey 1-0 in the San Francisco Bay Area on Saturday, a win that knocked Turkey out of the World Cup despite Paraguay finishing the game with ten men.

Matias Galarza put Paraguay ahead inside the first two minutes. He collected a pass from Julio Enciso and fired a low shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

The game turned chaotic before halftime. In first-half stoppage time, Miguel Almiron was sent off after a VAR review for covering his mouth during an altercation with Turkey's Baris Yilmaz, becoming the first player at this World Cup to be dismissed for that reason.

Turkey nearly leveled before the break, too. In the 33rd minute, Mert Muldur headed a free kick off the crossbar and then the post before the ball bounced clear.

With a man advantage, Turkey controlled most of the second half. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill kept Paraguay ahead with a save from Abdulkerim Bardakci, while Enciso wasted a good chance on the break at the other end. Can Uzun then missed a close-range opportunity from six yards.

Turkey pushed hard in search of an equalizer as time ran out. Gill denied Uzun again, and Deniz Gul could not turn in the rebound. In stoppage time, Merih Demiral headed a late chance wide.

The defeat means Turkey become the second team eliminated from this World Cup, after Haiti's exit following their loss to Brazil.
