Turkey Stun United States 3-2 With Dramatic Stoppage-Time Winner to End Unbeaten World Cup Run

Turkey beat the United States 3-2 in Los Angeles on Friday morning courtesy of Kaan Ayhan's prodded finish in the eighth minute of stoppage time, ending the co-hosts' unbeaten run at this World Cup. 

The result means little in terms of qualification, with the US already through as Group D winners and Turkey eliminated, but it gave the Turkish side their first World Cup victory in 23 years and delivered a dramatic finale in front of a raucous sellout crowd at SoFi Stadium.

The US made nine changes to their starting lineup but still got off to the perfect start. 

Celtic defender Auston Trusty was left completely unmarked at a corner and drove a low shot past goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir after just two minutes and 13 seconds, the second-quickest goal the US have ever scored at a World Cup after Clint Dempsey's effort after 30 seconds against Ghana in 2014.

Turkey hit back quickly. Arda Guler, the 21-year-old Real Madrid midfielder, equalised with a close-range finish from Baris Alper Yilmaz's reverse pass in the 10th minute. Guler then played a key role in the second goal, with Orkun Kokcu converting from close range after a sweeping move down the left in the 31st minute.

Sebastian Berhalter restored parity early in the second half, running onto a loose ball 20 yards out and hammering it into the bottom left corner. Substitute 

Christian Pulisic, making his return from a calf injury that had kept him out since the first half of the opening game, came on in the 58th minute to a huge roar from the crowd and went close on three occasions. Cakir reacted brilliantly to tip one effort against the post.

At the other end, Kenan Yildiz curled wide and Yilmaz lost his footing when well placed to score before the decisive moment arrived deep in stoppage time. Can Uzun collected the ball at the back post and pushed it past sprawling goalkeeper Matt Turner to Ayhan, who slid home from close range.

The US finish the group stage having scored seven goals, matching their best ever tally before the knockout rounds. 

Trusty's opener was also the 173rd goal of the tournament, breaking the all-time record for goals at a single World Cup, set in Qatar four years ago, and doing so in four fewer matches.

The US will face Bosnia-Herzegovina in the round of 32 on July 2 in Santa Clara. 

Hollywood stars including Brad Pitt, Ed Norton and Owen Wilson were among those in the stands for what turned out to be a memorable evening despite the defeat.
