France Beat Paraguay 1-0 to Book Quarter-Final Clash with Morocco

France are through to the World Cup quarter-finals after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Paraguay in Philadelphia, with Kylian Mbappe's second-half penalty proving the difference against a side that defended with tremendous discipline for long stretches.

Mbappe sent goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way from the spot in the 70th minute after substitute Desire Doue was brought down inside the box by Diego Gomez following a VAR review. The goal drew Mbappe level with Lionel Messi on seven goals in the Golden Boot race and sent France into a quarter-final against Morocco in Boston on Thursday 9 July.

Paraguay, who had knocked out Germany on penalties in the last 32, made France work extremely hard. Gustavo Alfaro's side defended in a deep, compact block and limited the two-time world champions to very few clear openings across the first half. France failed to register a single shot on target before the break despite dominating the ball, with frustration boiling over in the 36th minute when Mbappe lashed out after a foul from Andres Cubas.

France showed more urgency after the interval and had their first shot on target through Manu Kone's effort from distance in the 54th minute. It was only when Doue replaced Bradley Barcola on the left wing that France found the breakthrough, the 21-year-old PSG forward driving into the box and dancing past a defender before Gomez's sliding challenge gave away the decisive penalty.

The statistics showed just how dominant France were without always finding the final touch. They finished with 76% possession to Paraguay's 24%, completed 553 passes compared to Paraguay's 175 at 90% accuracy versus 57%, and had 15 shots to Paraguay's 5. France also won 12 corners to Paraguay's 2, reflecting sustained pressure throughout. However, they could only convert once from five shots on target, underlining how well Paraguay organised their defensive structure.

France now face Morocco, who beat co-hosts Canada 3-0 in Houston, in the quarter-finals. Paraguay exit the tournament having exceeded expectations, with their World Cup return in 2030 already confirmed as they are set to host one of the opening matches to mark the centenary of the competition.
