Switzerland Beat Algeria 2-0 to Reach World Cup Round of 16

Switzerland reached the knockout stage for the fourth consecutive World Cup and beat Algeria 2–0 in Vancouver, Canada, to advance to the Round of 16. The victory was their first World Cup knockout-stage win since defeating Germany in 1938.

Breel Embolo scored early and Dan Ndoye added a second just 46 seconds after halftime as Murat Yakin's side cruised through without ever looking seriously threatened. They will face the winner of Colombia and Ghana on 7 July at BC Place Vancouver.

Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a brilliant run from 20-year-old Johan Manzambi, who twisted and turned past Algeria defender Aissa Mandi before cutting the ball back for the Rennes forward to turn home with ease. Ndoye then caught Algeria cold at the start of the second half, finishing crisply inside the area to make it 2-0 and put the tie beyond doubt.

It was the first time Switzerland had scored more than one goal in a World Cup knockout match since a 7-5 defeat by Austria in the 1954 quarter-finals.

Algeria had a decent spell before the break but never looked like scoring, with their best chance coming when Fares Chaibi got into a promising position only to hit a timid shot straight at goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. They finished with 55% possession and completed 513 passes at 88% accuracy, but their control of the ball rarely translated into genuine danger. Switzerland were more clinical, registering 11 shots with 5 on target compared to Algeria's 8 shots and just 2 on target.

Switzerland had a chance to make it three late on when Fabian Rieder found himself free at the back post with the goal gaping, only to mishit his effort into the grateful arms of Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

The morning belonged to Manzambi, who was directly involved in five goals across the tournament after scoring three in the group stage and now adding two assists. According to Opta, he is the first Swiss player to reach that tally at a single World Cup since detailed data collection began in 1966, and at 20 years and 261 days old, the youngest player from any nation to do so in that period.

Captain Granit Xhaka, earning his 150th international cap, was also excellent throughout as Algeria were given little opportunity to build any momentum.

Switzerland's reward is a last-16 tie against Colombia or Ghana, back at BC Place, Vancouver, Canada, on 7 July.
