Brighton stun Man Utd as Villa, Everton and Fleetwood also advance in Carabao Cup
Manchester United suffered their heaviest home blow in almost 50 years on Wednesday night, blowing a two-goal lead to crash out of the Carabao Cup against Brighton. Elsewhere in round three, Aston Villa, Everton and lower-league Fleetwood Town all booked their places in the last 16.
United's Historic Collapse - A Result Not Seen In 50 Years
Brighton came from 2-0 down to beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford, condemning United to their first home defeat after leading by two goals since they lost 3-2 to Tottenham back in 1976.
United looked to be cruising early on. Teenager Shea Lacey scored on his first senior start after eight minutes, and Mason Mount doubled the lead two minutes later, tapping in after Marcus Rashford's shot was blocked and came back off the goalkeeper.
Brighton had other ideas. Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back right before half-time. Then, in a four-minute spell after the break, Brighton captain Pascal Groß equalised with a first-time finish from the edge of the box, and Kostoulas turned provider for substitute Maxim De Cuyper to complete the turnaround.
Head coach Michael Carrick sent on captain Bruno Fernandes with 18 minutes left in a bid to rescue the game, but United could not find a way back. Goalkeeper Jason Steele denied Rashford an equaliser, while at the other end debutant Karl Darlow kept out a late chance from Diego Gómez to preserve Brighton's win.
The numbers backed up the comeback. Brighton had 18 shots to United's 11, created five big chances to United's one, and scored three of them. United, by contrast, failed to convert any of their clear-cut chances.
It is now three cup exits in a row for United on home soil, following last season's shock loss at fourth-tier Grimsby and Brighton's FA Cup win at Old Trafford in January.
Abraham Responds in Style for Villa
Aston Villa beat Coventry City 3-1 away, with striker Tammy Abraham scoring twice after being left out of the side that lost to Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
Abraham had scored only once in his previous 16 appearances, going back to April, and had turned down loan moves to Ipswich and Everton in the transfer window to fight for his place under manager Unai Emery. He answered the pressure with an early goal after seven minutes, finishing off a fast break down the right.
Coventry hit back through a stunning Victor Torp free-kick from 25 yards, and Gustavo Hamer nearly added a second with a long-range effort of his own. But Villa took control again before the break, with Ross Barkley heading in an unmarked finish from a corner.

Abraham put the game to bed just before the hour, tapping in from another corner after getting the better of Coventry debutant Stephen Mfuni. Villa also had to manage a mid-match goalkeeping change, with Marco Bizot forced off injured at half-time and replaced by Zion Suzuki.
Villa dominated the underlying numbers too, with 18 shots to Coventry's 14 and four big chances created to none. It is a fifth defeat in six games for Coventry, who have now let in 15 goals in all competitions this season.
Alcaraz Off the Bench Sends Everton Through
Everton needed a moment of quality from the bench to beat Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney among those watching from the stands.
Substitute Charly Alcaraz settled the tie in the 80th minute, cutting inside the box before finishing calmly for his first goal for the club in over a year, since a strike against Mansfield in the same competition.
It was a tight game for long spells, with Everton's former goalkeeper João VirgÃnia in inspired form for Wolves. His best save came before half-time, when he denied a close-range header from Thierno Barry.
Everton had the better of the chances throughout, though, finishing with 16 shots to Wolves' six and creating five big chances to their opponents' none. The win kept Everton unbeaten after six matches this season.
Fleetwood Shock Sheffield United
League Two side Fleetwood Town produced the biggest surprise of the round, beating Championship club Sheffield United 1-0 at a wet and windy Highbury Stadium to reach the fourth round for the first time in the club's history.
The only goal came in the 57th minute, when a cross from Danny Andrew took a bounce in front of Sheffield United defender Rhys Norrington-Davies, and his header looped in off his own body for an own goal.
Fleetwood keeper Michael Cooper was the busier of the two goalkeepers early on, making saves to deny Mark Helm, Lewis McCann and Crispin McLean inside the first ten minutes. Fleetwood also hit the woodwork twice through Andrew and had a second goal ruled out for offside.
Sheffield United, who made seven changes after losing to Wolves in the league at the weekend, pushed hard in the closing stages. Cooper produced further saves to deny Sydie Peck and Ben Brereton DÃaz, while Fleetwood's Finley Potter, a former Sheffield United academy player, made a crucial goal-line block to deny Tom Cannon.
Fleetwood, unbeaten in eight games in all competitions coming into the tie, held on to complete one of the results of the round.
