Carlos Queiroz Returns as Ghana Head Coach Just Weeks After World Cup Exit

Ghana has brought back Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, just weeks after his first short run with the team ended in a World Cup round of 32 exit.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed the news on Wednesday, saying it had reached a new deal with the Portuguese coach to lead the team's "next phase." No details on contract length or his coaching staff have been shared yet.

Queiroz first took the job in April, only two months before the World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the U.S., stepping in after Ghana suddenly let go of Otto Addo. His first stint was short but eventful. The Black Stars opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Panama, then held England to a 0-0 draw, before losing 2-1 to Croatia in their final group game. That was enough to send them through, but their run ended in the round of 32, where Colombia beat them 1-0.

That loss marked the end of Queiroz's first spell in charge. Now, just weeks later, he is back.

In its statement, the GFA said talks with the coach and Ghana's Ministry of Sports and Recreation led to the decision to bring him back starting with the next international window. The association pointed to his experience and knowledge of the team as reasons for the move.

One familiar face won't be joining him this time around, though. Roger De Sá, who worked as Queiroz's assistant during the World Cup run, has since taken a new job. He was named technical director and coach at South African third-tier side Cape Town Spurs after the tournament.

The GFA says more information on Queiroz's plans and the team's upcoming schedule will come soon. For now, Ghana's focus turns to Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying. The Black Stars face Ivory Coast on September 23 and Gambia four days later, before a pair of matches against Somalia in November.
