Champions League Round-Up: Haaland Double Fires City Past Porto, Mbappe Climbs All-Time Charts

The Champions League delivered another action-packed night as several European heavyweights made their mark across the competition. Erling Haaland struck twice as Manchester City cruised past Porto, while Kylian Mbappe continued his remarkable scoring record as Real Madrid defeated Inter Milan. 

Here’s the full rundown of all the results and key moments from the night.

Haaland Strikes Twice as Man City Cruise Past Porto

Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City began their Champions League campaign with a comfortable victory against Porto.

The Norway star, who scored the only goal against Coventry on Saturday, was the match winner once more, nestling a header into the far corner and rolling home another to take his tally to 36 Champions League goals for City in only 40 appearances.

City have been knocked out by Real Madrid in each of the past three seasons, but their return to Lisbon's Estadio do Dragao, where they lost the 2021 final against Chelsea, was a much more pleasurable experience.

Enzo Maresca's side have started the Premier League season with three straight victories and they controlled this contest, with an impressive showing by teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi on his first start for City.

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa had an inspired first half, twice denying Haaland with superb reflex saves, while also keeping out efforts from Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden.

Francesco Farioli's side have won all five league games so far this season but were left frustrated at home and often showed how tough a task they have in Europe, failing to manage a single shot in the opening 45 minutes.

Though Alan Varela curled narrowly wide after his side fell behind to Haaland's opener and William Gomes also screwed off target, they ended the contest without being able to call Gianluigi Donnarumma into action.

The result means 2004 champions Porto have won only two of their past 17 games against English teams in European competition, while City will be aiming to lift the trophy for the first time since their Treble-winning campaign in 2023.

Mbappe Moves Into Joint-Fifth on All-Time Scoring List as Real Madrid Beat Inter

Kylian Mbappe moved joint-fifth in the list of all-time Champions League and European Cup goalscorers as Real Madrid overcame Inter Milan.

The France captain, 27, opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho's side with a clinical 14th-minute finish from just inside the box, his 71st goal in 99 appearances in the competition.

Only Karim Benzema (90), Robert Lewandowski (109), Lionel Messi (129) and Cristiano Ronaldo (140) have scored more. Three-time Real Madrid Champions League winner Raul scored 71 times in 142 appearances.

It was Real's first attempt on target, and their next one brought a second goal in the 23rd minute after a horrible mistake by Inter's Spanish goalkeeper Josep Martinez. Martinez lost possession after a back pass by Benjamin Pavard, with captain Federico Valverde dispossessing the keeper before tapping over the line.

Martinez made amends at the end of the first half with a double save to keep out Mbappe and Jude Bellingham before the post came to Inter's rescue.

Italian champions Inter had started well with Thibaut Courtois, making his 100th Champions League appearance, keeping out attempts by Hakan Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martinez. Inter also hit the top of the bar through former Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, while they sent on John Stones, a Champions League winner with Manchester City in 2023.

In a game full of chances, Bellingham missed a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 for the record 15-time European champions before Carlos Augusto swept home in the 77th minute to set up a grandstand finish between Mourinho's current and former clubs.

Despite the win, Real's fans were unhappy with their team's performance and made their feelings known during the game.

Parrott's Winner Sends Real Betis Past Lille

The Republic of Ireland's Troy Parrott scored the winner as Real Betis came from behind to begin their return to Champions League football with an exciting win at Lille.

The former Tottenham man continued his strong run of form since joining Betis last month, having also scored the only goal in victory against Real Madrid on Friday.

Lille dominated the first half, but a strong performance after the restart, and a Lille red card, helped the Spaniards to victory.

Ayase Ueda, a summer arrival from Feyenoord, got his second goal in as many games when he nodded in from close range after a well-weighted delivery from Ethan Mbappe, the brother of Real Madrid star Kylian.

Lille began to assert dominance but Betis soon restored parity when Marc Bartra met a whipped Pablo Fornals cross and sent a diving header past Berke Ozer.

Both sides scored with their first efforts on target, and Lille got back in front with their second when Alexsandro nodded in an outswinging Gaetan Perrin corner.

But Bartra levelled once again just three minutes after the restart when his slight headed touch directed an Isco free-kick past Ozer.

The Spanish side then got what would turn out to be the winning goal when Parrott rifled a low effort into the far corner.

Lille's night then rapidly worsened with Mbappe shown a red card after appearing to elbow Natan off the ball. The French club pushed for an equaliser, bringing on attacking reinforcements including former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, but were unable to breach the Betis defence.

Lille travel to Arsenal for their next Champions League game on 13 October (20:00 BST), while Betis host Porto on 14 October at 20:00 BST.

Guirassy Double and Own Goal Help Dortmund Edge Villarreal

Serhou Guirassy scored twice and netted an own goal as Borussia Dortmund opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 3-2 win against Villarreal.

A Renato Veiga own goal gave hosts Dortmund the lead early in the second half, but Santiago Mourino drew Villarreal level after his side missed several opportunities. Dortmund improved and Guirassy restored their lead in the 80th minute, before the Guinean striker converted a late penalty and then scored an own goal.

Villarreal failed to score in any of their four away matches in the Champions League last season. That curse looked set to continue as Georges Mikautadze scuffed a glorious chance from close range and Tajon Buchanan forced Gregor Kobel into a smart save.

Dortmund were fortunate to go into the break level, and in the 53rd minute were gifted the lead when Veiga inadvertently deflected a Maximilian Beier cross past his own goalkeeper.

But 14 minutes later, Mourino caught out Kobel with a flicked near-post header, seconds after the Dortmund goalkeeper had received treatment. Kobel made amends a minute later by tipping a fierce Buchanan strike over the crossbar, before Guirassy and Beier got in each other's way attempting to convert from a Marcel Sabitzer cross.

Guirassy's 100th Dortmund appearance had been a frustrating one, but he finally got his goal in the 80th minute when he tapped in from a Fabio Silva ball across the face of goal. Since the start of 2024-25, Guirassy has been directly involved in 26 goals in 25 Champions League appearances, a record bettered only by Erling Haaland.

Guirassy scored his 64th Dortmund goal three minutes later from the penalty spot after he was fouled at a corner by Mourino.

Villarreal were given late hope when a Kobel save bounced back into the goal off Guirassy's face, and almost equalised in the fifth minute of injury time when Veiga's close-range effort was deflected wide.

Villa Edge Past Club Brugge to Kickstart Their Season

Aston Villa breathed life into their season as they edged to a narrow Champions League victory over Club Brugge.

First-half goals from John McGinn, Emi Buendia and Nicolas Jackson earned the Premier League side a battling victory in Belgium. Hugo Vetlesen had briefly hauled the hosts level after McGinn's opener, but Buendia and Jackson, with his first goal for the club, put Villa in charge.

Nicolo Tresoldi's 61st-minute penalty after Aaron Wan-Bissaka's handball left the visitors facing a nervy last 29 minutes during which Tresoldi hit the post.

But Villa held on for a result they will hope to use as a platform to build from after three successive league matches without scoring, as manager Unai Emery looks to integrate 10 new signings.

The Europa League winners have lost six of the starting XI from their triumphant night in Turkey, including £117m Morgan Rogers after his exit to Chelsea. Emery has called for patience, knowing it will take time to rebuild.

And it was skipper McGinn, their longest-serving player, who energised their season, becoming Villa's record European scorer in the process with his 12th goal.

Marin's Free-Kick Gives AEK Athens Win Over LASK

Razvan Marin's superb first-half free-kick was enough to earn AEK Athens a 1-0 victory over LASK in their opening Champions League league phase fixture.

Midway through the first half, Marin bent his effort from just outside the penalty area over the wall, around the far post and past goalkeeper Lukas Jungwirth to separate Greek side AEK and their Austrian opponents.

AEK should have been further clear before half-time. Former Real Madrid and AC Milan striker Luka Jovic found himself clear on goal three minutes in, but saw his effort denied by the face of Jungwirth. Jovic later thought he had doubled his side's lead shortly after the hour mark, only for his brilliant header to be disallowed for an offside in the build-up. Hungary international Barnabas Varga also squandered two big chances late in the half for AEK, the latter a header that he could not steer on target.

LASK were making their full debut in the competition following their historic 5-4 aggregate victory over Celtic in the final round of qualifying last month.

Their best chance to level the game came in second-half stoppage time. Striker Sasa Kalajdzic, formerly of Wolves, headed over at the end of a late free-kick when home goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli was stranded on the floor.

For AEK, it was their first victory in the full rounds of the Champions League since 2006.

LASK's first ever Champions League home match is against Liverpool following the international break. AEK will head to London to face Shakhtar Donetsk, with the Ukrainian club playing their Champions League matches at Stamford Bridge this season.
