David de Gea Takes Swipe at Man City After Financial Charges Ruling

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has taken a swipe at Manchester City after an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 financial charges brought against it covering the period between 2009 and 2018.

The ruling has sent shockwaves through English football, opening the door to potential sanctions ranging from points deductions and fines to relegation or even the stripping of past titles.

De Gea, who made over 500 appearances for United before leaving in 2023, was among the first high profile figures to react publicly. Referring to the possibility of past Premier League titles being redistributed, he posted on X: "So...... Let's talk. How many Premier League titles have I won then?"

The jab points to several seasons in which United finished runners up to City, including 2011-12 on goal difference, 2017-18 under Jose Mourinho, and 2020-21 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

According to The Athletic, several major Premier League clubs, including United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham, have already brought in sports lawyers to look into potential compensation claims over lost prize money and commercial revenue tied to those seasons.

City are expected to fight any sporting sanctions and compensation claims through every available legal channel, while the Premier League faces the tricky task of enforcing punishment without completely rewriting the competition's recent history. The legal process is likely to drag on for months before any final resolution is reached.
