Edson Alvarez Denies Link to Alleged Kidnapping of Film Producer in Mexico

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez has hit back at claims that he was connected to the alleged kidnapping of a film producer in Mexico, calling the accusations baseless.

The allegations come from Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez, who told Mexican outlet TV Notas that he was pulled into a car at gunpoint in Mexico City's Polanco district back in 2024. He says the people behind it were relatives of Jonathan Toache Bedolla, who is Alvarez's former father-in-law.

Ordonez does not accuse Alvarez of taking part in the kidnapping itself, but claims the player knew about the plan. He also says he was hired to make a documentary about Alvarez's life and was never paid the £150,000 he was owed for the work.

Alvarez, Mexico's captain and a regular for the national team since his 2017 debut, responded on social media, rejecting the claims and saying he may take legal action.

"I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me," he wrote.

He said his name had been dragged into the story repeatedly in recent months to draw attention to something that, in his words, has nothing to do with him.

"There are limits, and attributing knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature to me without presenting a single piece of evidence clearly crosses that line," Alvarez said.

He accused certain media outlets of chasing "sensationalism" rather than sticking to the facts, and said he plans to keep his focus on his family and his football.

Alvarez joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and has made 74 appearances for the club since then. This season, however, he has played just once, coming on in the Carabao Cup tie against Portsmouth.
