Eguavoen Named Interim Super Falcons Boss for Comoros Olympic Qualifiers

Augustine Eguavoen has been handed temporary charge of the Super Falcons ahead of their 2028 Olympic qualifying games against Comoros, according to a report from Soccernet.

The 61-year-old, who currently serves as the Nigeria Football Federation's technical director, will take the women's team into the two-legged tie on October 7 and 10. It will be his first time coaching a women's side.

The appointment comes after weeks of confusion at the top of Nigerian football. The former NFF board pushed out coach Justin Madugu and his technical staff following a poor showing at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations. But before the federation could name a replacement, the Gusau-led board itself stepped down, leaving the Super Falcons without any clear leadership.

Nigerian journalist Mike The Pundit first reported that the NFF, now under General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, had settled on Eguavoen to fill the gap. Neither Eguavoen nor the NFF has issued a public statement confirming the details of the arrangement.

Eguavoen is a familiar face in Nigerian football circles. Over almost 20 years, he has repeatedly stepped in as caretaker coach of the men's Super Eagles whenever the job fell vacant. This time, he switches to the women's game for the first time in his long career.

The move raises questions about how seriously the federation is treating the fixture, since it suggests no permanent appointment for the women's team will be made before October. On paper, Nigeria should have little trouble beating Comoros given the gap in quality between the two sides. But after a rocky few months, few are willing to guess exactly how the Super Falcons will perform on the pitch.

Anything short of victory would be seen as a major setback, both for Eguavoen and for the NFF officials who made the call to put him in charge.
