Everton 2-2 Manchester United: Maitland-Niles Rescues Point With Late Stunner

Everton and Manchester United shared the points on Sunday, playing out a wild 2-2 draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium after Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a stunning goal deep into stoppage time.

The 27 year old, who joined Everton on deadline day, curled home an unstoppable shot in the 96th minute to snatch a point for the Toffees just when it looked like United had done enough to win it.

The game came alive in the second half after a fairly quiet start. United took the lead seconds after the restart when Bryan Mbeumo cut inside and fired home with his left foot, with Kobbie Mainoo playing a part in the move. Everton kept pushing forward and got their reward late on, as Tyrique George smashed in an equaliser after being set up by fellow substitute Hayden Hackney.

United thought they had grabbed the win soon after that. Luke Shaw whipped in a cross and Benjamin Sesko headed it home to make it 2-1, his second goal in as many visits to Everton this year. But Maitland-Niles had other ideas, curling in a brilliant strike from distance to send the home fans wild and complete a dramatic finish.

The draw means Everton remain unbeaten in the league so far this season, one of only seven top-flight sides yet to lose. That comes despite a tricky week off the pitch, with the club selling forwards Iliman N'Diaye and Beto before the transfer window shut, leaving manager David Moyes short on options up front.

For United, the result continues an early-season pattern of leaking goals. They have now conceded at least twice in each of their first three league games, something that has not happened in five years. Manager Michael Carrick will have plenty to think about defensively, even though his side once again showed they can score goals at the other end.

George was named man of the match for his role in the comeback, while Mainoo also stood out in midfield for United. But it was Maitland-Niles, filling in from the bench with barely any minutes on the clock, who ended up writing the headline with the best moment of his Premier League career so far.
