Fabio Grosso Sacked by Fiorentina After Winless Start to Serie A Season

Fabio Grosso has become the first head coach to lose his job in any of Europe's top five leagues this season after Fiorentina parted ways with him following a winless start in Serie A.

The club confirmed the decision late Sunday, a day after a 2-1 home defeat to Torino. "ACF Fiorentina confirm that Fabio Grosso has today been relieved of his duties as First Team Head Coach," the club said in a statement. No replacement was named immediately.

Grosso had only been in charge since June, brought in after Paolo Vanoli led Fiorentina to a 15th-place finish last season. His stint didn't last long. After a win over Serie B side Benevento in the first round of the Coppa Italia, Fiorentina were beaten 4-0 by AS Roma in their Serie A opener, then lost 3-0 at home to promoted side Frosinone in their first league game at the Artemio Franchi. Across their opening three league matches, Fiorentina have scored just once and conceded nine.

Grosso, who scored the winning penalty for Italy in the 2006 World Cup final shootout against France, is the first managerial casualty of the season among the top leagues in Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany.

The poor start comes at an awkward time for the club, which is currently celebrating its 100th anniversary. Fiorentina was founded in 1926. The club has also been dealing with change off the pitch following the death of longtime owner Rocco Commisso in January, with his son Giuseppe Commisso now in charge.

Fiorentina will look to turn things around away at promoted side Venezia on Friday, before a Coppa Italia derby against Pisa the following week.
