Lozano Returns to Mexico Squad After Almost a Year Out
Hirving Lozano is back in the Mexico squad for the first time in nearly a year, earning a call-up from new coach Rafael Marquez for the upcoming round of friendlies.
The LA Galaxy winger, who is on loan from San Diego FC, had been left out of the picture for most of 2026 and missed the World Cup entirely. That was largely down to a falling out with San Diego that left him without club football until he joined the Galaxy in August.
Marquez named his 30-man roster with Lozano included, but there were two notable absences. Star forward Raul Jimenez and Ballon d'Or nominee Julian Quinones were both left off the list after picking up recent injuries.
Mexico will play four friendlies over the coming weeks, taking on Colombia on September 26, Peru on September 29, the United States on October 3, and Chile on October 6.
With Jimenez and Quinones out, the attacking responsibility will likely fall on players like teenage sensation Gilberto Mora, World Cup standout Erik Lira, and Santiago Gimenez, who recently signed with Porto.
Liga MX side Chivas sent the most players of any club, with six representatives in the squad: Raul Rangel, Diego Campillo, Roberto Alvarado, Hugo Camberos, Santiago Sandoval, and Luis Romo.
This is one of Marquez's first squads since taking over as head coach. He was previously an assistant under former manager Javier Aguirre, and he said earlier this month that he feels ready to build on what's already in place.
"I'm not starting from zero. Having worked with Javier [Aguirre] from start to finish gives me great confidence in continuing this process," Marquez said. "I already know the players and the environment well, and I've been supported by a group of experienced people who have operated at the highest levels. That is exactly what we want: to take this national team to another level."
