Newcastle Tie Down Hall With New Deal to 2031, Fending Off Man Utd Interest

Newcastle United have handed left back Lewis Hall a new contract that runs until 2031, seeing off interest from Manchester United in the process.

The 22 year old, who joined from Chelsea in 2023, has agreed a two-year extension to his existing deal after becoming a regular in Eddie Howe and now Matthias Jaissle's side.

A Boyhood Fan's Proud Moment

Hall grew up supporting Newcastle, and he said signing the new deal meant a great deal to him personally.

"It's an absolute pleasure to play for this club and to represent the supporters," he said. "I know how much it means to them.

"To be able to bring joy to their faces, it's a big thing for me. I obviously have a family connection with the club, which is incredibly important to us all.

"One of the main reasons I play is to make my family proud, and I know how much it means to them to watch me playing for Newcastle United."

He also pointed to the club's strong start under new head coach Jaissle. "It's a really good place to be. It's really pleasing with how we've started the season, especially with the new gaffer and coaching staff coming in, and I think we can go on to achieve really big things."

Jaissle Full of Praise For Young Defender

Jaissle said Hall was central to his plans at the club, calling him "a very important player for us and for what we are building here."

"His mentality is exactly what you want in a young player," the coach said. "He wants to learn every day and he wants to be better in every match.

"Lewis covers ground in a way that few players can. He defends with maturity and intelligence, and his technical level means he can support the team higher up the pitch.

"What excites me most is that I believe the best is still to come from Lewis. He has a lot of room to develop, and I am looking forward to working with him as he grows with us."

Hall has made 106 appearances for Newcastle since his move from Chelsea.

Analysis: A Significant Move In A Busy Summer

Newcastle have had a lot going on this summer with players coming and going, but locking Hall down stands out as one of the bigger moves.

It was only last month that Jaissle told Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel there was "no chance" of Hall leaving, after Schmeichel mentioned his old club's interest in the defender. This new deal backs that up.

It also rewards how far Hall has come since arriving from Chelsea three years ago as a raw talent. He has sharpened up defensively, and on his best days has shown he can even shut down Barcelona's Lamine Yamal in open play during the Champions League.

Going forward, he has been just as useful, already setting up two goals this season. That fits a pattern. Among full backs who played at least 900 minutes in the Premier League last season, Hall topped the charts for high-speed runs and underlapping runs per game, and ranked in the top three for dribbles completed per match.

With numbers like that, there's a strong case that there's more still to come from him, especially as he tries to fight his way back into the England squad after missing out on the World Cup.
