Real Madrid Could Break January Transfer Tradition for Jose Mourinho

Real Madrid could be ready to break from one of their long standing transfer habits this winter, with Jose Mourinho potentially given the final say on whether the club dips into the January market for a midfielder.

According to Defensa Central, club president Florentino Perez would be open to making an exception to Madrid's usual reluctance to sign players mid season if Mourinho decides his squad genuinely needs strengthening. There is currently no specific target being considered, and the club hasn't started actively looking for a midfielder, so any move would depend heavily on how the team performs over the coming months and what Mourinho concludes he's missing.

Real Madrid have traditionally steered clear of the winter window unless left with no other option, generally preferring to work with the squad they have, promote from within, or wait until summer when far more players are available. That approach could now be put to the test under Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach is expected to monitor the balance of his midfield throughout the first half of the season, and if injuries, dips in form or a lack of depth leave him short of options, he could go to Perez and ask for reinforcements in January. According to the report, Perez would be willing to at least hear him out rather than dismiss the idea outright.

That doesn't mean a January signing is being planned as things stand. It would only become a real possibility if Mourinho identifies a genuine footballing need.

Madrid's caution around January business has traditionally come down to how hard it is to find the right player at a sensible price during the winter window. Clubs are usually reluctant to sell important players mid season, and those who are available often come with inflated price tags, which makes things particularly tricky for a club with Madrid's expectations both on the pitch and financially.

Because of that, Perez is not expected to sign off on a deal simply to add numbers to the squad. Whoever Mourinho brings in, if anyone, would need to offer an immediate impact while also fitting into the club's longer term plans.
