Tottenham Booed Off as Aston Villa End Winless Run With 3-2 Victory

Tottenham's miserable start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday as Aston Villa came from nowhere to claim a 3-2 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, holding off a spirited late fightback from the hosts to pick up their first league victory of the campaign.

Spurs were booed off at full time, and despite spending more than £300 million on new signings over the summer, the club is already starting to look like one in crisis. The result leaves Roberto De Zerbi's side without a win in five games to start the season.

Tottenham dominated possession for large parts of the match, finishing with 64% of the ball and out-shooting Villa 20 to 15, but it was the visitors who made their moments count. Villa led 1-0 at halftime and had stretched that to 3-0 by the 79th minute before a nervy finish saw Spurs claw two goals back in the closing stages.

Johan Manzambi broke the deadlock right on the stroke of halftime, finishing off a move kept alive by Boubacar Kamara, very much against the run of play. The goal came at an awkward moment for Spurs, with captain Micky van de Ven off the pitch receiving treatment at the time.

Villa doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when Nicolas Jackson found the corner with a well-placed finish from the edge of the box, after Manzambi again played provider. Ten minutes later, Emiliano Buendía made it 3-0, curling a superb right-footed effort into the same corner from even further out, this time assisted by John McGinn.

Spurs did have a case for feeling hard done by. VAR ruled out what would have been an equalising goal around the hour mark, with Andy Robertson flagged narrowly offside in the buildup before Mohammed Kudus bundled the ball home from close range. Instead of drawing level, Tottenham found themselves further behind soon after, and that setback seemed to give Villa the belief to push on and see the game out in style.

Tottenham's response, when it came, arrived too late to matter. Conor Gallagher pulled one back in the 86th minute after good work from Kudus, and deep into stoppage time, Jan Paul van Hecke headed home from an Andy Robertson delivery to make the scoreline respectable. Cautions were shown to van Hecke, Jackson and Matty Cash as the intensity boiled over late on.

The underlying numbers told a story of territory versus efficiency. Tottenham held 71% of the possession in the second half alone and racked up 11 corners to Villa's 1, along with 64 final third entries compared to just 33 for the visitors. But their end product let them down, with only 4 of 28 crosses finding a teammate, while Villa needed just 6 crosses all game to make their attacks count. Villa also edged the expected goals battle, 1.16 to 1.00, despite having far fewer shots, and put in a monumental defensive shift, managing 37 clearances and 15 interceptions to keep Spurs at arm's length for as long as possible.

Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was a key figure throughout, particularly in a strong first-half showing, finishing with 5 saves, 4 high claims and 3 punches as he commanded his box under pressure. At the other end, Antonín Kinský made 3 saves for Tottenham.

Off the bench, Spurs did add some much-needed spark. Kudus was lively after the interval and set up Gallagher's goal, while James Maddison brought energy and added two shots in his 24 minutes on the pitch. But Villa's rearguard, marshalled by Tyrone Mings, held firm when it mattered most.

The standout performer on the day was Buendía, who was named Man of the Match with a Sofascore rating of 8.2, backed by fan voting too. Alongside his goal, he created three key passes, won 10 duels and made six ball recoveries in an all-action display that summed up Villa's approach: efficient going forward, relentless without the ball.

For Tottenham, van Hecke's stoppage-time header offered a small consolation and capped a solid individual outing, while Sandro Tonali also impressed in midfield. But it wasn't enough to prevent a result that will only increase the scrutiny on De Zerbi as questions continue to mount over his side's sluggish start to the season.
