UCL Roundup: Manchester United Crush Sabah, Kane Hits Milestone as Bayern, Como and Lens Earn Big Results

Manchester United thrashed Sabah FK at Old Trafford on Thursday night, their biggest Champions League win since 2020, while Harry Kane reached 55 European goals as Bayern Munich eased past Bodo/Glimt elsewhere in a busy night of league phase action.

United Make It Look Easy Against Azerbaijan Champions

Manchester United needed just three days to get over their derby prep and put on a show, beating Sabah FK by a wide margin at Old Trafford. Goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko had the game wrapped up by half time.

Sabah, playing their first ever Champions League league phase game after getting through four rounds of qualifying, had a few decent moments but were mostly overwhelmed by the gap in quality.

The night meant the most for Benjamin Sesko. Starting for the first time since 3 May, the Slovenian striker brought an edge to United's front line that had been missing in their first three league games. That will put him firmly in the mix to start Sunday's derby against Manchester City, leaving boss Michael Carrick with a decision to make about who plays on the left, Cunha or Marcus Rashford, who didn't even get off the bench.

Carrick will probably enjoy having that headache. Speaking after United's game at Everton on Sunday, he said the team's start to the season had "not been that bad," though he knows four points from three league games can't turn into four points from four.

With tough away trips to Atletico Madrid, Como and Sporting Lisbon still coming, plus home games against Roma and Bayern Munich, this win gives United a solid platform. Sat just below holders Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona in the table after round one, things look decent from their end for now.

Kane and Olise Shine as Bayern Brush Aside Bodø/Glimt

Harry Kane hit his 55th Champions League goal and Michael Olise scored twice as Bayern Munich made light work of Bodo/Glimt to open their campaign.

Vincent Kompany's side, who reached the semi-finals last season, had to work for it in the first half against a stubborn Bodo/Glimt side, but pulled clear after the break.

Jamal Musiala, making his first start of the season, opened the scoring early in the second half when Kane's shot bounced kindly into his path. That goal happened to be Bayern's 900th ever in the competition, a number only beaten by Real Madrid.

Kane then got on the scoresheet himself, heading home a free kick to bring his tally to 55 goals in just 71 Champions League games. That puts him third fastest to hit 55 goals by appearances, behind only Erling Haaland (49 games) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (70 games). It was also his 34th European goal in only 39 games for Bayern.

Bodo/Glimt nearly grabbed a moment of magic when Andreas Helmersen spotted goalkeeper Manuel Neuer off his line and tried an audacious lob from the halfway line, but the ball landed on the roof of the net.

Alphonso Davies then smashed in a third for Bayern from distance before Olise curled a neat finish into the top corner. Things got even worse for the Norwegians in the closing minutes when Odin Bjortuft was sent off for a foul on Olise, who then added his second in stoppage time.

Brown's Goal Earns Fenerbahce a Point Against Roma

England-born full back Archie Brown scored as Fenerbahce held Roma to a 1-1 draw in their return to Champions League football.

Roma took the lead through Bryan Cristante, who curled a low shot into the corner from 20 yards out in a first half where chances were hard to come by. Roma had more of the ball, but Fenerbahce looked sharper going forward.

Brown, 24, equalised soon after the restart, chipping the ball over goalkeeper Mile Svilar after being played through by Mason Greenwood. Brown came through the academies at West Brom and Derby County but never played senior football in England, instead building his career at Lausanne in Switzerland and Gent in Belgium.

Roma tried to find a way back in front but couldn't break down Fenerbahce's defense. The Turkish side grew in confidence after the equaliser, especially once Romelu Lukaku came on, but neither team could find a winner.

Fenerbahce travel to Aston Villa on 14 October, while Roma host Real Madrid the same day.

PSV and Shakhtar Share the Points in Tight Contest

PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk drew 1-1 at Philips Stadion in a game that turned on a controversial refereeing call.

Shakhtar took the lead deep in first half injury time through Gleiker Mendoza, but only after PSV right back Sergino Dest was left on the ground in the middle of the pitch appealing for a foul that referee Halil Umut Meler waved play on from. Mendoza used the space left by Dest's absence to cut inside and fire past goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

Dest made up for it just three minutes into the second half, arriving in the box to slot home a low cross from Armando Obispo and level things up for Peter Bosz's team.

Both sides pushed for a winner late on, Shakhtar's Arda Turan will have been pleased with a point given his side reached the Conference League semi-finals last season, but neither could find a breakthrough.

PSV are next in action at RB Leipzig on 13 October, while Shakhtar host AEK Athens the following day, at Stamford Bridge, which will serve as their home ground in Europe this season.

Late Drama as Lens Beat 10-Man Slavia Prague

Lens scored twice in stoppage time to snatch a 3-2 win over 10-man Slavia Prague after coming from behind on two separate occasions.

Danijel Sturm gave Slavia the lead early in the second half with a clever piece of skill, cutting inside before curling the ball into the far corner. That came only three minutes after Slavia had been reduced to 10 men, with substitute Mikulas Konecny sent off for denying a goalscoring chance just three minutes after coming on at half time.

Lens made their extra man count as Slavia tired, with Abdallah Sima turning the ball in from close range after the hosts failed to clear their lines.

Sturm thought he had won it for Slavia with a strike from the edge of the box in the 88th minute, but Lens had other ideas. Florian Thauvin equalised in the first minute of stoppage time, and Ruben Aguilar completed the turnaround just two minutes later.

Slavia travel to Sabah in Azerbaijan on 13 October, while Lens host Sporting the same day.

Como Mark Historic Debut with Big Win Over Leipzig

Como beat RB Leipzig 4-1 on their Champions League debut at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, a result that capped off a special night for the small Italian club.

Martin Baturina and Tasos Douvikas scored in the first half to put Como 2-0 up before Assane Diao and Maximo Perrone added two more after the break.

It took Como 119 years to reach Europe's top competition, but only 15 minutes on the night to make their mark. Baturina scored the club's first ever continental goal in front of their 11,000-strong crowd after Leipzig defender Ridle Baku failed to clear a Douvikas cutback.

Douvikas doubled the lead in the 38th minute, latching onto a Baturina pass and slotting past goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt. Diao added a third after the break with a finish from a tight angle, before Andrija Maksimovic pulled one back for Leipzig late on. Perrone wrapped things up with a fourth goal for Como in the 90th minute.

Como's rise has been remarkable. The club went bankrupt twice in the last twenty years before ending a 21-year wait to reach Serie A in 2024, following three promotions in six seasons. Under coach Cesc Fabregas, a former Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona midfielder, they finished fourth in Serie A last season to book their Champions League spot.

Como's Champions League debut was a hot ticket, so hot that club president Mirwan Suwarso and several directors gave away their own seats to let elderly fans attend.

Como travel to Feyenoord on 14 October, while Leipzig host PSV Eindhoven the day before.
