Yves Bissouma Joins Ajax on Free Transfer After Tottenham Exit
Yves Bissouma has signed for Ajax on a free transfer, giving the midfielder a fresh start after a difficult final year at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 30-year-old Mali international has put pen to paper on a deal running until June 30, 2027, and it takes effect immediately. His move to Amsterdam comes after his Tottenham contract expired at the end of last season.
Things had gone downhill for Bissouma in North London. He made just 11 appearances in his last year at the club and ran into several disciplinary problems along the way, including a suspension two years ago after footage circulated on social media appearing to show him using nitrous oxide.
Despite all that, Bissouma says he's arriving at Ajax with a clear head and plenty of motivation. "I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice," he said.
He also revealed the move wasn't sudden. He'd been in talks with people at the club well before signing. "Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here," he explained. "They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well."
Bissouma made it clear he's not just there to make up the numbers. "I'm a winner and then you want to win everything. That's my desire and I'm ready to start," he said.
He also wants to take on a mentoring role in a squad known for developing young players. "I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything," he added.
Ajax technical director Jordi Cruijff said the club had been keeping tabs on Bissouma's situation for months, with talks first starting back in August. He's happy the club managed to land an experienced player without paying a transfer fee.
"Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible," Cruijff said.
