Alonso Hails Morgan Rogers as a "Very Complete Modern Football Player"
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has praised summer signing Morgan Rogers as a "very complete modern football player" after the forward scored again in the 5-1 win over Bournemouth.
Rogers, 24, joined from Aston Villa in the summer and has quickly become a key man at Stamford Bridge. He has four goals and four assists in eight appearances, with goals against Fulham, Arsenal, Hull City and now Bournemouth.
Alonso said his form is no surprise. "No, [his form isn't a surprise] because he is young, he's fresh, he's strong and he's quick, he is a very complete modern football player," he said.
The manager also pointed to how well Rogers has settled in. "His availability is also very high and this is very important," Alonso said.
"He looks fresh and he is enjoying [his football] because he's a great guy and is connecting very well with his team-mates, and with everyone. He is having a great impact on the team and the club." He has linked up especially well with creative players such as Cole Palmer.
His fitness is just as impressive. Rogers was part of the England squad that finished third at the World Cup this summer, which cut his pre-season break short.
Even so, he has shown no sign of tiredness in the Premier League. He has played more than 70 matches for club and country since the start of last season, a workload that would test even the most experienced players. Alonso says his ability to be available week after week is as important as what he does on the pitch.
For now, Chelsea are enjoying the return on their summer buy. With his mix of strength and delicate footwork, Rogers is the kind of player Alonso wants to build around. Managing his minutes will be key as the season goes on, but at 24 he looks on course for a career-best campaign.
