Barcelona Set to Complete €1.8bn Camp Nou Revamp With 105,000 Capacity by 2028
Barcelona's revamped Spotify Camp Nou is set to hold 105,000 fans when it is finished in the first quarter of 2028, with the whole project costing around €1.8 billion, according to AS.
The club took a big risk by starting the work when its finances were at a low point. Joan Laporta, though, looked at the long-term picture and believed the extra capacity and modern facilities would pay off in the end.
The roof is the biggest job still to come. It will cover 48,000 square metres and needs a compression ring made up of 92 columns and about 3,200 tonnes of steel. Another 3,500 tonnes will go on cables, masts, lighting and other parts.
To fit the roof, around 18,000 seats have to be taken out for now. That is part of why Barça will not open the third tier this season. Once it is ready, that tier will hold more than 35,000 fans and sit roughly 80 metres above the pitch. The roof will also carry 18,000 square metres of solar panels, and the stadium will have rainwater collection and geothermal systems.
The money side is just as big. Barça expect the new ground to bring in about €350 million more. Around 33,000 square metres are set aside for two VIP rings with 9,400 premium seats, which is 3.5 times the hospitality space of the old stadium.
The club recently put its committed income at about €700 million from 2,000 new long-term VIP licences. About 5,000 premium seats have already been sold, worth more than €380 million.
There is more inside. A new museum will take up 2,645 square metres, and the Wi-Fi and phone network is being built to serve over 100,000 people at once. Fans will also get 5G coverage from three companies and about 3,500 screens.
Barcelona fans will have to wait a while to see it at its best, as the full stadium may not be seen until the 2029 season or slightly later.
