Conference League: Brighton Thrash Kauno Zalgiris 4-0 as Copenhagen and Freiburg Win
Brighton brushed aside Lithuanian side Kauno Zalgiris 4-0 on Thursday, with Georginio Rutter getting two goals in their first Conference League game of the season.
Rutter broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, sweeping in Ibrahim Osman's pullback after VAR overturned an offside-style call that had gone against him. Jack Hinshelwood added a second right before the break, and he was back from two months out with an ankle problem. Rutter bagged his second after the restart, again set up by Osman, and Matt O'Riley rounded off the night with a header from a cross by teenager Younes Ibrahim, who was making his debut.
Brighton had almost all the ball and the visitors barely threatened. It was the perfect start for Fabian Hurzeler's side, who now face Crystal Palace on Sunday before a trip to Jablonec next Thursday.
