Cristiano Ronaldo Handed 30-Day Ban and £215 Fine by Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has been banned for 30 days and fined 255 euros (£215) by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for walking out of the national team camp last month.

The 41-year-old captain left Portugal's Nations League squad in September. He had been an unused substitute against Norway and then learned he would not start against Denmark on 1 October. The ban counts from the day of the Denmark game, so he has already served 19 days and will not miss a single Portugal match. They play Denmark again on 14 November, then head to Wales three days later.

The FPF disciplinary committee said it considered "the remorse shown" by Ronaldo in his statement, along with his "contributions to soccer and recognition for athletic merit". It added that he handed in his CV, with his awards and achievements, as part of his defence.

In that earlier statement, the Al-Nassr forward said he left because coach Jorge Jesus twice "broke his word", which he called an "absolute breach of trust". He also accepted responsibility, said sorry to his team-mates and fans, and admitted he deserved to be punished.

Jesus denied making any deal with Ronaldo but has left the door open for his return. FPF president Pedro Proenca told Portuguese outlet Record there is a "strong desire" to have him back once the matter is settled.

Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 games for Portugal, both men's world records, and helped them win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles. He joined Al-Nassr in December 2022 on a reported yearly salary of £177m and signed an extension last year.
