Former Man City Star David Silva Comes Out of Retirement at 40 to Join Hong Kong Club Sha Tin
Former Manchester City midfielder David Silva has ended his retirement at the age of 40 to sign for Hong Kong Premier League side Sha Tin.
Silva won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain. He also won four Premier League titles with City, and he spent 10 years at the club.
He collected 11 major honours there and has a statue outside the Etihad Stadium. The first three of those league titles came in the period for which City have been found guilty of breaking the league's financial rules, a verdict the club have appealed.
He retired in 2023 after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in pre-season training at Real Sociedad.
"I'm so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong," Silva said in an Instagram video.
Sha Tin are eighth in the league after four games. Their next match is against Hong Kong Football Club on Sunday, October 18, though Silva will not be ready by then.
The club said: "David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut."
