‘If I Don’t Win, I’m Not Happy’: Spalletti Reacts to Juventus Draw With Rennes
Juventus boss Luciano Spalletti says he liked his side's fight in a 2-2 draw with Stade Rennais, but he wants them to move faster with the ball and he is not happy when he does not win.
"We did well today, and our tempo was good too; unfortunately, we conceded two goals we shouldn't have," Spalletti said. He then explained what he wants to see. "The ball sets the pace... if it comes back slowly, we move up slowly, but if it comes back quickly, we have to move up quickly."
He gave credit to the French side as well. "They raised their game today, but we're still missing something; if I don't win matches, I'm not happy," he added.
Spalletti was pleased with the response after falling behind. "I'm satisfied with the attitude tonight. Coming back into the game after going behind was difficult... the players accepted the challenges without giving up," he said.
Zeki Celik gave Juventus an early lead at the Allianz Stadium in the Europa League. Musa Al-Taamari and a Boulaye Dia penalty put Rennes ahead by half-time. Nick Woltemade levelled from the spot midway through the second half. Late on, a Jhon Lucumi goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.
Rennes coach Franck Haise was happy with the point, which was the first time his club has avoided defeat away to Italian opposition in UEFA competitions. "I'm very pleased with the point because the game could have gone either way," he said. "We stayed calm after conceding early."
The draw keeps Juventus unbeaten in the league phase, with five points from their first three games. They travel to AZ Alkmaar on Matchday 4, and they play Lecce in Serie A on Sunday. Spalletti also wants his team to polish its pressing before then.
