Mourinho Considers Shock Decision to Bench Superstar Duo Against Villarreal

Jose Mourinho is thinking about leaving Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe on the bench together for the first time when Real Madrid face Villarreal in La Liga.

Defensa Central reports that the idea is being talked about because of fitness worries over both forwards after the international break. It would not be a punishment. The aim is to manage their workloads before a busy run of domestic and European games.

Vinicius is back from Brazil's three friendlies in Australia and India. The trips were long and he played a lot of minutes, so Mourinho needs to check how he is feeling before picking the team.

Tiredness is not the only issue. Vinicius has struggled to find his best form this season, and a short spell out of the starting XI could give the coaching staff a chance to reset his role without sending a long-term message about where he stands.

The plan is not to drop him for long. Mourinho wants him at his best for the big games ahead, and the Villarreal match could be a chance to rest him while asking for a stronger response.

Mbappe's case is more about fitness than form. The France forward suffered a hyperextension of the posterior capsule in his left knee and has started individual work at Real Madrid City. He is likely to be cleared to return to the squad, but Mourinho will still have to decide whether he can handle a full 90 minutes. Starting him too soon could be a needless risk as the schedule gets heavier.

Madrid have options to cover for them. Brahim Diaz, Arda Guler and Jude Bellingham could all play a part, and Carlos Espi and Yan Diomande are also mentioned as possible choices, depending on who is available and what the team needs.

The Villarreal game is the first step in a run that includes Roma, Sevilla and RB Leipzig before Madrid take on Barcelona in El Clasico on October 25. That list of fixtures gives Mourinho a good reason to think beyond a single starting line-up.

Leaving out both stars would be a big call, but it would not necessarily mean their status has changed. The key question is whether a carefully managed return can help them contribute steadily through October.

Mourinho's final decision will depend on how they look in training, with the goal of having his main attackers ready for the games that matter most.
