Pochettino’s Son Targets European Breakthrough After Move to Andorra

Maurizio Pochettino, son of United States coach Mauricio Pochettino, is set to make his European debut when Inter Club d'Escaldes visit Mjällby in the Conference League on Thursday.

The 25-year-old helped the club become the first Andorran side to reach the league or group phase of a European competition. He joined the club in 2025 and was part of the squad that won the league title last season.

He told BBC Sport the move had been a good one. "It was a great decision to come here. You have the chance to do something you might not get the chance to do elsewhere. More eyes are on you, the spotlight is bigger, it gives you a chance to push on in your career."

Born in Barcelona while his father was playing for Espanyol, Maurizio came through the youth ranks at Southampton and Tottenham, then spent six months at Watford. The winger moved to Spain in 2022 and played in the third and fourth tiers before heading to Andorra.

His father won the UEFA Intertoto Cup with Paris Saint-Germain in 2001 and took Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019.

Inter Club d'Escaldes will also play 1991 European Cup winners Red Star Belgrade, FC Copenhagen and LaLiga side Getafe in the competition.

The players know the size of the task. "We know it will be a massive challenge playing against some great teams with much bigger budgets than us, but we also believe in ourselves," Maurizio said.

"We are going to try to show the rest of Europe that we are a team that can make things difficult for the bigger opponents, and that we can get points and belong here."
