Real Madrid Reach Agreement With Courtois Over Contract Extension to 2028

Real Madrid have reached an agreement in principle with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on a contract extension that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu for the 2027/28 season, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Romano reports that both sides have agreed verbally and that the new deal is expected to be signed soon. Courtois' current contract runs out in 2027, but Madrid have decided to secure his future now instead of waiting until the end of the season to review it.

The club rates the 34-year-old as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and feels his performances have earned another year.

The move fits Madrid's usual approach with older players. They hand out one-year extensions, which keep experienced stars at the club and let them review each case regularly. Acting early also limits the chance of Courtois talking to other clubs.

The former Chelsea keeper is still playing at the highest level. His experience and consistency make him a central part of Madrid's plans, even as the club looks to the future in other positions.

Courtois has no plans to retire soon. "For now, I want to play for another five or six years," he has said in the past.

He also has an eye on life after football. He would like to help build a strong goalkeeping structure at Madrid, but he does not see himself as a first-team coach.

"I haven't decided what I'll do afterwards, but I'm not sure I want to be a first-team coach," he said. "With all the players you have to manage, I'd get old very quickly."

That interest could give Madrid another way to benefit from his knowledge in the long run. For now, his priority is playing, and the renewal shows the club's belief that he can keep delivering until at least 2027/28.
