Ronaldinho Pays Emotional Tribute to “Brother” Messi After Argentina Farewell
Ronaldinho has paid tribute to his former Barcelona protege Lionel Messi after the forward played his last match for Argentina, a 3-0 win over Benin in Buenos Aires.
The Brazilian, who mentored a teenage Messi at Camp Nou, posted his message on social media. "What a pleasure and what a joy it has been to have been part of your story from day one, brother," he wrote.
"You made us smile and enjoy football so much. Your name is etched in the history of your country, and of the whole world."
He spoke about what winning for your country means. "Only we know the joy we felt when we fulfilled our childhood dream, representing our entire nation and becoming world champions," Ronaldinho wrote. He added: "You gave your all for your national team and for your country."
He also showed understanding for Messi's decision to step away. "I understand you perfectly, and I know that everything to do with family makes us rethink things. Enjoy life, brother. I wish you all the best, today and always."
Messi, 39, ended his 21-year international career at the Monumental. He set up two goals and then scored a penalty in the 71st minute, his 126th for Argentina. He announced in August that he would retire from the national team.
After the final whistle, a tearful Messi spoke to the crowd and dedicated the night to his late father, Jorge, who died in August aged 68. "It's a lot of emotions. Obviously the first thing I think about is my dad," he said.
He added: "All that's left for me to do is say thank you. It's meant so much to me to wear this shirt for 20 years. I never stopped striving, fighting, or wanting to be here."
He admitted that leaving hurts. "This is a very difficult moment for me," he said. "Not coming back will be a great sorrow. I'd love to come back forever, because playing in Argentina is the most wonderful thing that can happen to you."
Messi will now focus on Inter Miami. With no more international trips, he should be able to manage his workload better and spend more time with his family.
