Sevilla File Formal Complaint to La Liga Over Controversial Real Madrid Defeat
Sevilla have made a formal complaint to La Liga after their controversial 4-1 defeat at Real Madrid on Sunday, saying refereeing decisions put them at a disadvantage at the Bernabeu.
The Andalusian club said several key moments were not shown properly on TV. In a club statement, Sevilla pointed to the "unequal and inadequate coverage in the broadcast and replays of decisive moments in the match."
They named three incidents in particular: Marc Cucurella's challenge on their player Gerard "Peque" Fernandez, Arda Guler's elbow, and the foul that led to Madrid's second goal. Sevilla say these were "deliberately omitted from the official match highlights, despite footage being available."
Coach Luis Garcia Plaza was furious that Guler was not sent off for the elbow on Peque, which came when the game was still goalless. He said his side was "denied the chance to play another game, 11 against 10." Guler went on to score Madrid's opener in the 30th minute.
Sevilla have asked La Liga for a "thorough investigation" into what happened. They also want steps taken "to ensure impartial, consistent and fair treatment of all clubs in the competition."
The club also said it does not agree with the explanation it got from Spain's Technical Committee of Referees when the two sides met on Tuesday to go over the disputed moments.
