Kane Joins an Elite Club

Harry Kane came into this match needing two goals to reach 50 in the Champions League. He got them both. A penalty in the first half and a brilliant strike in the second moved him onto the landmark in exactly 66 games, the same number it took Lionel Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo got to 50 in 91 games. Only Erling Haaland was quicker, doing it in 49.

The penalty itself had a bit of drama. Kane's original effort was saved, but the goalkeeper came off his line too early and the referee ordered a retake. The second attempt was emphatic. Sportiello dived the wrong way and Kane hammered it home.

How the Match Played Out

Bayern were already through after winning 6-1 in Italy. This was more of a victory lap, but they treated it seriously. After Kane's brace, teenager Lennart Karl fired in from a Luis Diaz pass to make it three. Diaz then clipped the ball over the goalkeeper after a quick break. Atalanta got a late consolation through Lazar Samardzic, but Bayern were already thinking about Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

A Tale of Two Halves

Newcastle came to the Nou Camp with a plan and showed real fight in the first half. Anthony Elanga scored twice to draw them level on two separate occasions, and at 3-2 down at the break, Eddie Howe's side were very much still alive. Then the second half happened, and it all fell apart.

Barcelona picked them apart completely after the restart. Fermin Lopez, Raphinha, and a Robert Lewandowski double turned a competitive tie into a rout. By the end it was 7-2 on the night and 8-3 on aggregate. Newcastle will have wanted to get on the plane home long before the final whistle.

Raphinha Was Unstoppable

On a night when Lamine Yamal gets the attention by default, it was Raphinha who Newcastle simply could not deal with. Two goals, two assists, and a penalty won. That is a complete performance from a number 11. There were moments where it looked like he was playing a different sport to everyone else on the pitch.

This was the kind of display you expect from a captain in a knockout game. Barcelona could have been rattled when Newcastle pulled level twice. Instead Raphinha kept driving them forward. When the tie was effectively over in the second half, he was still hunting for more.

Newcastle's Defending Was the Bigger Story

Barcelona were excellent, but Newcastle made it far easier than it needed to be. Lewis Hall and Malick Thiaw were caught out in the build-up to Raphinha's opener. Dan Burn was openly frustrated with his teammates at the set-piece for Bernal's goal. After the break, the structure collapsed entirely.

Lewandowski got ahead of Tino Livramento too easily for the fifth. Thiaw failed to cut out a pass for the sixth. Then Jacob Ramsey played a ball straight to Raphinha for the seventh. When a team this good is given that much space to work with, the scoreline stops being surprising.

What It Means

For Barcelona, this is a proper statement. PSG are the only side to beat them at home all season, and they are now one of the genuine contenders. Hansi Flick has this team playing with real energy and depth.

For Newcastle, it hurts. But they reached the last 16 for only the second time in their history, and for three of the four halves in this tie they competed with Barca. The second half capitulation is the thing to learn from. They will.

Liverpool vs Galatasaray  4-0   Agg: 4-1

Liverpool Needed This

Coming into this game a goal down from the first leg in Istanbul, with the crowd still simmering after being booed off at the weekend, Liverpool needed a performance. They got one. Dominik Szoboszlai's set-piece goal levelled the tie before half-time, and then three goals in 11 second-half minutes made it 4-0 on the night. Liverpool are in the quarter-finals.

Mohamed Salah had a first-half penalty saved, which could have made things even more comfortable. But the momentum never dipped. Once the goals started in the second half, Galatasaray had nothing to offer.

Salah Makes History

The pick of the goals was Salah's. A curling strike from outside the box into the top corner, the kind of finish that looks effortless. It was also his 50th goal in the Champions League, making him the first African player to reach that milestone. Anfield gave him everything he deserved.

PSG Up Next

For Arne Slot, this is a first Champions League quarter-final as a manager. His prize is a tie against PSG, the reigning champions and the same side that knocked Liverpool out of this competition last season. There is a story there. Liverpool will be up for it.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Atletico Madrid  2-1   Agg: Atletico through 6-3

Too Much to Overcome

Spurs needed a small miracle after losing 5-2 in Madrid in the first leg. The miracle did not arrive, but this was still a night that mattered. They won the game 2-1, showed real character, and gave Igor Tudor something to build on as they turn their full attention to avoiding Premier League relegation.

Randal Kolo Muani headed in a Mathys Tel cross on the half-hour to give Spurs the lead. Atletico levelled early in the second half through Julian Alvarez with a brilliant strike, with Spurs furious about a foul in the build-up that was not given. Xavi Simons then put Spurs ahead again with a sharp curling finish.

David Hancko headed in from an Atletico corner with 15 minutes left to end any realistic hope of a comeback. Simons got a late penalty to seal the win on the night, but Atletico were through comfortably.

A Different Kind of Night

The tie was effectively over before it started given the first leg, but Spurs did not play like a team that had given up. Mathys Tel was a constant threat and missed a big chance to make it 2-0 before half-time. Atletico keeper Juan Musso, standing in for the injured Jan Oblak, made key saves throughout.

There was genuine appreciation from the Tottenham crowd at the final whistle. The last time these fans were at the stadium for a league game, they were booing a defeat to Crystal Palace. This was a very different atmosphere. Spurs face Nottingham Forest on Sunday with Forest just one point behind them. They go into it with more belief than a week ago.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Spurs are all out. Arsenal are the only English club left in. The quarter-finals are going to be something.
