Araújo Earns Uruguay Late Draw Against Saudi Arabia

Maxi Araújo scored a late equalizer to rescue a 1-1 draw for Uruguay against Saudi Arabia in Miami, denying the Saudis another shock World Cup win after their famous upset of Argentina at the last tournament.

Saudi Arabia took the lead in the first half through centre back Abdulelah Al-Amri, who reacted fastest to turn in a rebound after goalkeeper Fernando Muslera had saved Mohamed Kanno's header. It capped a strong opening period for the Saudis, who had already tested Muslera from a corner a few minutes earlier when Al-Amri connected with a header that the keeper did well to keep out.

Uruguay struggled to find rhythm in a quiet first half. Federico Viñas headed an effort straight at goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais after half an hour, but it was one of few real chances for the South Americans before the break, with Al-Owais called into action again before half-time to deny Viñas a second time.

The two-time champions came out with more purpose after the interval and began to dominate possession. Manuel Ugarte came close to leveling things just after the hour mark, striking the post with a low effort from distance.

Uruguay's pressure eventually paid off with 10 minutes left. Viñas headed toward goal again, and although Al-Owais produced another save, Araújo was on hand to steer the loose ball home from close range and level the score.

Uruguay pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Substitute Brian Rodríguez curled a shot just wide of the post, and Al-Owais was forced into two more outstanding stoppage-time saves, denying both Nicolás de la Cruz and Federico Valverde, to ensure Saudi Arabia held on for a point. 

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia face a tough test against pre-tournament favorites Spain on Sunday, June 21 in Atlanta. Uruguay, meanwhile, will take on Cape Verde later that same day at Miami Stadium.
