Bayer Leverkusen Sign Afonso Moreira From Lyon in €30m Deal Until 2031

Bayer Leverkusen have brought in Portuguese winger Afonso Moreira from French side Lyon, the Bundesliga club confirmed Thursday. 

The 21-year-old has signed on until 2031 in a deal worth a reported 30 million euros plus bonuses.

Moreira only joined Lyon last season, arriving from Sporting for two million euros, but quickly made an impression. He chipped in with eight goals and 11 assists across 37 competitive outings for the Ligue 1 club before earning his move to Germany.

The player said he felt the fit was right from the very first talks with the club. Sporting director Simon Rolfes was equally enthusiastic, pointing to Moreira's speed, work rate, and ability to both finish and create chances as reasons the club moved for him.

The transfer also appears to have the fingerprints of new head coach Carles Martinez Novell all over it. The Spanish coach, who arrived from Toulouse earlier this month, reportedly had Moreira at the top of his wishlist as he builds his squad for the season ahead.
