Dembele Hat-Trick Fires France to Top of Group I as Norway Rotation Backfires

Ousmane Dembele scored a first-half hat-trick as France beat a heavily rotated Norway side 4-1 in Boston to finish top of Group I. 

Desire Doue added a fourth in stoppage time to complete a dominant night for Didier Deschamps' side. 

France will face a third-placed team in New Jersey on June 30, while Norway take on Ivory Coast in Dallas on the same day.

Norway manager Stale Solbakken made 10 changes to his lineup, resting Erling Haaland and several other key players with qualification already secured. France, by contrast, named a strong starting XI including Kylian Mbappe, and the gulf between the two lineups showed from the very first minute.

Dembele opened the scoring in the seventh minute after Mbappe spread the ball wide to find him in space, and the Ballon d'Or winner drove a powerful right-footed effort past goalkeeper Egil Selvik. The second came in the 20th minute as Dembele cut inside from the right onto his left foot and curled a superb strike into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Norway briefly gave themselves hope when Thelo Aasgaard swept the ball past Maignan just 79 seconds after the restart from kick-off, but Dembele had the final say on the first half. Collecting a pass from Aurelien Tchouameni on the edge of the box in the 32nd minute, he cut inside once more and bent another precise effort beyond Selvik to complete his treble.

It was the second-fastest World Cup hat-trick from the start of a match in history, behind Erich Probst's 24-minute treble for Austria against Czechoslovakia in 1954, and the first time a player had scored three goals in the opening half of a World Cup game since Russia's Oleg Salenko against Cameroon in 1994.

France almost scored inside the opening 60 seconds when Mbappe crashed a shot against the underside of the crossbar, and the Real Madrid forward was central to much of what France did well throughout the first half.

Norway were handed a route back into the match shortly after the break when Oscar Bobb was brought down by Theo Hernandez in the box, but Jorgen Strand Larsen's hesitant penalty was comfortably saved by Mike Maignan low to his left. That miss effectively ended any hope of a comeback.

Dembele was withdrawn in the 65th minute with France already in full control, and Doue sealed the win with a looping header from Bradley Barcola's cross deep into stoppage time.

Dembele finishes the group stage with four goals and has now established himself as one of the tournament's top scorers. France head into the knockout rounds in fine form, having won all three of their group games.
