Egypt Beats New Zealand 3-1, Wins First-Ever World Cup Match

Mohamed Salah scored once and set up another goal as Egypt fought back to beat New Zealand 3-1, claiming the first World Cup win in the country's history.

The result puts the Pharaohs on track to reach the knockout stage for the first time ever.

New Zealand grabbed an early lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman headed home a corner from Tim Payne. The All Whites had also let two leads slip in their opening game against Iran, and ended up doing exactly that again here.

Egypt turned things around with three goals in just 24 minutes during the second half, after manager Hossam Hassan made some changes at the break.

Mostafa Zico, named after the Brazilian football legend, headed in a cross from Mohamed Hany in the 58th minute to level the score.

Salah then combined with Zico for a quick one-two before slotting the ball into the bottom corner to put Egypt ahead.

The former Liverpool man then turned provider, whipping in a corner that substitute Trezeguet headed home in the 82nd minute.

It's Egypt's first win in their fourth World Cup appearance, with their first coming back in 1934. A win over Iran on Saturday would now be enough to top the group.

New Zealand are still chasing their first ever World Cup win, and will need to find it against Belgium if they want to keep their tournament hopes alive.
