Netherlands Cruise Past Tunisia to Seal Top Spot in Group F

The Netherlands finished top of Group F with a 3-1 win over Tunisia in Kansas City on Friday morning, setting up a round of 32 clash with Morocco in Monterrey on Tuesday.

Brian Brobbey scored his third goal of the tournament while Tunisia contributed two own goals to a dominant Dutch performance played through torrential rain. Tunisia finish bottom of Group F with three defeats and 12 goals conceded, ending a disastrous World Cup campaign.

The game was effectively over inside seven minutes. Denzel Dumfries whipped a cross across the face of goal in the third minute and Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri, attempting to clear, turned it into his own net. Brobbey then made it 2-0 when Virgil van Dijk expertly headed a free kick across the box and the Sunderland striker chipped the ball home from close range.

The Netherlands controlled the rest of the first half comfortably, racking up 12 shots before the break and rarely being troubled by a Tunisia side that had already been eliminated before kick-off.

Tunisia gave themselves some hope in the 54th minute when Hazem Mastouri redirected a corner into the net, but the Dutch restored their two-goal advantage eight minutes later. Jan Paul van Hecke's header from a corner glanced off Anis Slimane on its way into the net for another own goal.

The Netherlands managed 20 shots across the 90 minutes and could easily have scored more, with the gap in quality between the two sides clear throughout. Ronald Koeman's side never truly needed to move out of first gear.

For Tunisia, the result rounded off a catastrophic tournament. They were beaten 5-1 by Sweden in their opening game, a result that led to coach Sabri Lamouchi being sacked. Herve Renard took over amid reports of tension within the squad, but a 4-0 loss to Japan followed before Thursday's defeat extended their winless run to six matches.

The Netherlands, who drew their opener 2-2 with Japan before thrashing Sweden 5-1, now head into the knockout stage with momentum. 

They face Morocco, the 2022 semi-finalists, on Tuesday. Japan, meanwhile, must face Brazil in Houston on Monday after finishing second in the group.
