Neymar Donates $250,000 to Venezuela Earthquake Relief as Football Community Mourns Tragic Losses

Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. has donated $250,000 to support relief efforts following the twin earthquakes that hit Venezuela, according to Venezuelan news outlet El Sumario.

The money will go toward providing food, clean water, temporary shelter and other emergency supplies to families affected by the disaster.

"My heart goes out to the people of Venezuela," Neymar said, adding that he hoped the donation would bring strength and comfort to those affected.

The two earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck Venezuela on June 24 and have so far killed at least 1,430 people and injured more than 3,238 others. Over 3,100 families have been displaced. Multiple aftershocks followed the initial quakes, making rescue operations more difficult.

The disaster has left a deep mark on the Venezuelan football community. Héctor Bello, a defender for second division club Marítimo de La Guaira, lost his wife Andrea, who died shielding their one-year-old daughter Alana during the quakes. Andrea's body was later recovered from the rubble. Alana survived and was rescued.

His teammate Lucas Trejo faced a similar tragedy. Trejo's wife Yanina Maranella and their two young children, Aaron and Ainhoa, were found dead after more than 70 hours of search and rescue efforts.

The sporting community also mourned the loss of 18-year-old footballer Yiimvert Berroteran, who was killed in the disaster, as well as Daisy, the wife of former MLB player Gorkys Hernandez.

Several countries have stepped in to help. India launched Operation Amistad, sending 66 tonnes of relief materials and a medical team to the affected areas.

Neymar's donation comes as he continues his recovery at the FIFA World Cup with the Brazilian national team. The 34-year-old missed Brazil's first two group stage games through injury before coming on as a late substitute in their 3-0 win over Scotland.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti said Neymar's fitness has improved noticeably and he could play more minutes in the next match against Japan. "In the last week, his progress has been significant," Ancelotti told reporters. "He is now doing well enough to play more."

Brazil topped Group C with seven points, following a 1-1 draw with Morocco and back-to-back 3-0 wins over Haiti and Scotland.
