Real Madrid Sign Cucurella from Chelsea for £51.8m

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea on a six-year deal, with the total fee reaching up to £51.8m.

The initial fee is £47.5m, with a further £4.3m available in add-ons. The deal gives new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho another defensive option as he builds his squad ahead of the new season.

Cucurella, 27, had been a priority target for Mourinho, who reportedly saw off interest from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester City to land the Spain international. Despite links to a return to his former club Barcelona, the defender chose Madrid.

Chelsea brought Cucurella to Stamford Bridge four years ago from Brighton for £63m. He went on to make 163 appearances for the club and picked up two trophies, the Conference League and the Club World Cup, before his relationship with the club soured. He had publicly criticised Chelsea's transfer policy and their decision to part ways with manager Enzo Maresca earlier this year.

He was not regarded as one of Chelsea's untouchable players, a group that includes Cole Palmer and captain Reece James.

In a brief statement, Chelsea said they thanked Cucurella for his contribution to the club and wished him well for the next step in his career.

With Cucurella gone, Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, signed from Ajax last summer for £37m, is now the frontrunner to fill the left-back spot, though Chelsea may still look to add cover in that position.

Cucurella is currently on World Cup duty with Spain, who kick off their Group H campaign against Cape Verde on Monday.

Meanwhile, Mourinho has had a busy summer at the Bernabeu. Deals for Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Bernardo Silva are also done, with the Portuguese boss set to officially begin his new role next month.

Separate reports have linked Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez with a move to Madrid, but Chelsea value him at no less than £120m. Fernandez joined from Benfica in 2023 for £106.8m and said in April he would be open to life in Madrid, though no deal is currently in progress.
