Mbappé Double Fires France Past Sweden and Into World Cup Last 16

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France swept aside Sweden 3-0 to reach the World Cup last 16, where they will face Paraguay in Philadelphia on Saturday 4 July.

The goals took Mbappe to six for the tournament, drawing level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot standings, and made him the all-time leading scorer in World Cup knockout matches with 10 goals at that stage of the competition.

Bradley Barcola added the second goal early in the second half as France produced one of the performances of the tournament so far, dominating from start to finish and leaving Sweden with little hope of an upset.

Mbappe broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime after a first half in which France had been denied by a combination of fine saves, the woodwork and an offside flag. He ran onto Ousmane Dembele's pass, wrong-footed Viktor Gyokeres with a stepover and fired into the far corner.

Sweden had a glaring chance to level immediately after the break when Elliot Stroud blazed over from 12 yards, but that proved to be the peak of their resistance. Eight minutes into the second half, Michael Olise slipped the ball through Victor Lindelof's legs to find Barcola, who drove it in at the near post to make it 2-0.

Mbappe completed the scoring in the 74th minute, combining with Olise before curling a composed finish into the roof of the net. He was substituted with six minutes remaining to a standing ovation, with Sweden's best chance of the match coming shortly after when Gyokeres fired straight at Mike Maignan.

French goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom deserved credit for keeping the score respectable. France dominated possession with 61% of the ball and registered 21 goal attempts, including 13 shots on target, while Sweden managed just seven attempts with only three testing the goalkeeper. France also held a commanding advantage in corners at 9-1, and Widell Zetterstrom made 10 saves across the night to prevent the scoreline from becoming even heavier.

Coach Didier Deschamps, who missed France's final group game following the death of his mother, was back on the touchline to oversee a display that underlined his side's status as one of the favourites for the title. 

Paraguay, who knocked out Germany on penalties, await in Philadelphia.
