Haaland Makes History as Norway Beat Ivory Coast 2-1 to Reach World Cup Last 16 for the First Time

Norway have made history at the 2026 World Cup, beating Ivory Coast 2-1 in dallas stadium, Texas, to win their first ever knockout match at the tournament and set up a last-16 meeting with Brazil.

Erling Haaland scored the winner in the 86th minute, tapping home from close range after three Ivory Coast defenders converged on Patrick Berg, who squared the ball to find his striker unmarked in the box. It was Haaland's fifth goal in three games at this World Cup and his thirteenth in successive appearances for Norway. The goal also saw him become the fastest player in history to reach 60 international goals.

The match had been level for much of the second half after a tense, cagey opening. Antonio Nusa put Norway ahead six minutes before halftime with a moment of real quality, cutting in from the left and curling a right-footed shot into the top corner from Martin Odegaard's assist. The pass meant Odegaard became only the third player on record to register an assist in each of his first three World Cup appearances.

Ivory Coast looked to have forced extra time when substitute Amad Diallo equalised in the 74th minute. Diallo, surprisingly left out of the starting lineup by manager Emerse Fae, came off the bench and immediately changed the game, cutting in from the right, beating two defenders and slotting home his second goal of the tournament.

Diallo nearly had an even bigger impact moments earlier, clearing a Torbjorn Heggem volley off the line from four yards out, and he almost forced extra time again in the closing stages with a 25-yard free kick that goalkeeper Orjan Nyland was forced to tip away.

Norway controlled much of the underlying play despite Ivory Coast's territorial dominance. The hosts had 14 corners to Norway's 3 and out-shot the visitors 14 to 9, but Norway's chances were of a higher quality, finishing with an expected goals advantage of 2.02 to 1.15.

Nyland made four saves to keep his side ahead at key moments, while Kristoffer Ajer was outstanding at the back, completing 53 of 54 passes and making 13 clearances. For Ivory Coast, Diallo's cameo earned him the highest rating on the pitch, while Ibrahim Sangare and Franck Kessie had given the hosts a strong platform in midfield.

The win is a landmark moment for Norwegian football. The team had not reached the knockout stages since 1998, when they famously beat reigning champions Brazil 2-1 in the group stage on their way to the Round of 16.

Norway will now face Brazil in the last 16 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Sunday, 5 July, with kickoff at 21:00 WAT. The winner could face England in the quarter-finals.
