World Reacts As Messi Retires From International Football

The world has reacted as Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football with Argentina, bringing an end to a career that made him the country's all-time top scorer and most capped player.

Tributes and reactions poured in from across the football world within hours of the announcement, with fans, former teammates, and pundits reflecting on the end of an era defined by one of the greatest careers the sport has ever seen.

The 39-year-old, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, finishes his international career with 125 goals in 207 appearances.

"This Is One That Hurts Me Deeply"

In a statement, Messi said the decision hurt but that the time had come to step away. "Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply," he said. 

"I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team. I've given it my all, I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance."

Messi revealed he actually wrote the retirement message back on 21 July, just two days after Argentina lost to Spain in this summer's World Cup final. 

Earlier in August, he had said he was thinking about his future in football following the death of his father, Jorge, who died at 68 after a long illness. 

In a follow-up post on Instagram, Messi said, "Today, after what happened with my dad, I'm even more convinced than before."

He will continue playing club football with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, where his contract runs through the end of the 2028 season.

Messi's international career got off to an unusual start. He debuted for Argentina in 2005 as a 63rd-minute substitute in a friendly win over Hungary, only to be sent off less than a minute later after his arm swung and caught full-back Vilmos Vanczak. Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul posted a message calling Messi the greatest of all time and thanking him for the happiness he brought, adding that Messi is "eternal." 

Fellow international teammate Leandro Paredes shared a similarly emotional message, telling Messi he loved and admired him and would always be grateful for what he gave both to Paredes personally and to the country. 

Other current and former Argentina squad members joined in. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez posted a photo of himself carrying Messi on his shoulders, along with a lengthy message of support, while Atletico Madrid's Giuliano Simeone also paid tribute on Instagram. 

Goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli wrote that Messi's legacy went beyond his performances on the pitch, crediting him with showing teammates the value of resilience, hard work, camaraderie, and love of country. 

FIFA president Gianni Infantino was among the football officials who also shared his reaction to the announcement.

Fans flooded social media with messages ranging from heartfelt gratitude to disbelief. Some described the moment as the symbolic end of an era, with one widely shared post declaring, "The GOAT retires. Football retires with him today." 

Others expressed sadness at seeing him step away, with one supporter writing, "Today and always, Lionel, thank you very much for such a nice trip... Eternally grateful," while another called him the best to have ever played the game. 

Beyond individual tributes, Argentina's football federation has previously signaled its intention to honor Messi once his international career ended. 

AFA president Claudio Tapia has said the association plans to retire the number 10 shirt in Messi's honor once he steps away from the national team, following in the number's history as the shirt once worn by Diego Maradona. 

Tapia said the federation would not allow any other player to wear the number after Messi, calling it the least the organization could do to recognize his legacy. 

It remains unclear whether FIFA, which requires players to wear numbers one through 23 in official competitions, would permit the number to be formally retired, given the governing body previously rejected a similar request tied to Maradona.

What Comes Next

With his international career now over, attention turns to the next generation of Argentina players expected to carry the team forward, several of whom featured alongside Messi in this summer's World Cup squad. 

Messi himself acknowledged this shift in his statement, saying there are "really great young players coming through" who deserve the chance to lead the team into its next chapter.
