Aston Villa vs Arsenal: Confirmed XI as Both Teams Name Strong Lineups

Big game at Villa Park today as Aston Villa host Arsenal, and both managers have gone with lineups that tell us a lot about how they want to approach this one.

The shape here looks like Villa are going with a back three or a hybrid setup, using Lindelöf's experience alongside Barkley and Pau to control the middle of the park, while Cash and Maatsen push on from wide areas. McGinn as captain will be the engine in midfield, doing the dirty work alongside Kamara, and Buendía gets the license to roam and create. Jackson leads the line, with Hemmings coming in at 53, a real show of faith from the manager in giving a squad number player a start in a game this big.

What stands out straight away is the bench. Garnacho, Abraham, and Wan-Bissaka waiting in the wings gives Villa serious firepower and cover if things need changing at half time.

Arsenal come into this with a settled looking spine but a couple of interesting selection calls further forward.

Raya is in goal as usual, with a back four of White, Mosquera, Gabriel, and Calafiori. That's a good mix of steel and composure, with Gabriel marshaling things centrally. Rice sits in front of the defense doing his usual job of breaking up play and shielding the back line, and Lewis-Skelly gets the nod alongside him, which shows the manager trusts his game reading even against tough opposition away from home.

Odegaard pulls the strings from midfield as always, and Saka lines up on the right looking to cause problems down that flank. Tzolis starts, which is a slight surprise given the options on the bench, and Havertz leads the line up top.

With Gyokeres, Eze, and Madueke all available to bring on, Arsenal have serious quality to change the game if needed. Keeping Zubimendi and Merino in reserve also gives them options to shore up the midfield late on if they need to protect a lead.

Key Battles to Watch

Saka vs Maatsen: This is probably the matchup that decides a lot of the game. Saka loves cutting inside onto his stronger foot, and Maatsen will need to stay tight and not give him room to turn.

Rice and Lewis-Skelly vs McGinn and Kamara: The middle of the park battle here is going to be physical. Both sides have picked players who like to press and win the ball back quickly, so expect a lot of stoppages and duels in that zone.

Havertz vs the Villa back line: Havertz is good in the air and clever with his movement, so Lindelöf, Barkley, and Pau will need to stay switched on, especially from set pieces and crosses.

What to Expect

Villa look set up to be compact and hit Arsenal on the counter through Jackson and Buendía, while Arsenal will likely dominate possession and try to break Villa down patiently through Odegaard and Saka.

If Villa can keep it tight in midfield and use their pace out wide, they have a real chance of frustrating Arsenal. But if Arsenal's front line gets space to work with, especially with the attacking options they have on the bench, they have more than enough quality to take control of the match.

Either way, this one should be worth watching from start to finish.
