Chelsea Survive Scare as Barcelona Score Five and Lyon Hit Eight in Women's Champions League
There was a lopsided scoreline, a five-goal thriller, a scare for England, and a goalless stalemate in an eventful opening round of the Women's Champions League league phase.
Chelsea made hard work of their second match of the campaign, edging past Austria Vienna 2-1 at AFC Wimbledon's Cherry Red Records Stadium. Wieke Kaptein opened the scoring with a stunning 25-yard strike that came in off the crossbar, but there was a worrying moment early on when Keira Walsh was substituted in the 20th minute and headed straight down the tunnel, with her fitness now a concern ahead of Chelsea's Women's Super League clash with Arsenal at the weekend. Austria Vienna, playing their first ever Champions League match, gave the Blues a scare throughout, hitting the post through Modesta Uka and forcing a smart save from Livia Peng, and Chelsea will know they got away with a scrappy win against a side that pushed them all the way.
Barcelona also enjoyed a big night at home, beating Paris FC 5-2. Paris FC actually took an early lead through É. Viens inside five minutes, but Barcelona responded in ruthless fashion, with Kerolin, Clara Serrajordi, Ewa Pajor and Caroline Graham Hansen all scoring before half time to make it 4-1 at the break. Pajor added a second of her own in the second half, while Paris FC grabbed a late consolation through C. Mateo, but the result was long since settled by then.
The standout result by a distance came in Switzerland, where OL Lyonnes thrashed Servette Chênois 8-0. It was 4-0 at half time already thanks in part to an own goal, before Marie-Antoinette Katoto ran riot with a hat-trick either side of the break. Melchie Dumornay chipped in with two of her own, and a second Servette own goal plus a late strike from Inès Benyahia completed the rout as Lyon put down an emphatic marker in this season's competition.
Finally, OH Leuven and Roma played out a goalless draw, with neither side able to find a breakthrough across the full 90 minutes.
