‘It’s Coming Back Home’: Patrick Vieira Opens Up on New Senegal Head Coach Role

Patrick Vieira is now the head coach of Senegal's national football team, and he says it feels like "an honour" to take the job. The 50-year-old was unveiled by the Senegalese Football Federation on Friday in Dakar, marking his first ever international coaching role.

Vieira was born in Senegal but made his name playing for France, where he won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. Before landing this job, he managed Crystal Palace, Nice, Strasbourg, New York City and, most recently, Genoa, where he was sacked in November 2025 after a rough start to the season.

Speaking to reporters at his unveiling, Vieira didn't hold back on how much the role means to him.

"I was born here, my parents were born here, and it really is a homecoming," he said.

He takes charge of a Senegal squad that had a wild year. The Teranga Lions crashed out of the 2026 World Cup in the last 32, blowing a 2-0 lead against Belgium in the final minutes before losing in extra time. Earlier in the year, they beat Morocco 1-0 to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, though that title is now tangled up in a legal dispute after some Senegal players and staff walked off during the final over a penalty call. The Court of Arbitration for Sport still has to settle who actually keeps the trophy.

Vieira says he isn't looking to rip up what's already working.

"It's about respecting what the federation has put in place... it isn't to throw everything out of the window," he explained, adding that he wants to build a team with a clear structure and a lot of "intensity and aggression."

He's stepping straight into the pressure. Senegal already has two 2027 Afcon qualifying matches on the calendar this month, with more coming in November and March next year. The first game, originally set for Dakar, has now been moved to Mozambique because the capital is busy prepping for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

There are a few big absences to deal with early on. Longtime goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has retired from international duty, and star forward Sadio Mane will miss the opening games with what Vieira called "a bit of a physical issue," though he's expected back soon. Right-back Krepin Diatta is out too since he's currently without a club, and Ismaila Sarr is absent as he continues sorting out a transfer situation and dealing with a groin injury at Crystal Palace.

As for the doubts about his managerial record, Vieira isn't worried.

"I've got no doubt about my ability to meet the expectations of fans," he said, adding that his tough spell at Genoa only made him a better coach.

He was met by a big crowd when he landed in Dakar on Thursday, with fans greeting him at the airport as he waved a Senegal flag. "Taking charge of this national team isn't just a new stage in my career," he said. "It's coming back home."
