Manchester United Borrow Another £90m as Total Debt Rises to £1.15bn

Manchester United have taken on another £90m in borrowing since June 30, and confirmed they spent £191.7m on new signings over the summer, a higher figure than initially reported when the deals were announced.

United completed three major signings during the window, bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea on July 13, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on July 14, and Carlos Baleba from Brighton on August 25. At the time those deals were announced, the combined fees were reported as around £153m, meaning it isn't currently clear where the extra spending has gone. United have been approached for comment.

The additional £90m in borrowing was revealed in a more detailed filing to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, a day after the club published its 2025-26 accounts up to June 30. Those accounts showed United's overall debt remains above £1 billion, despite significant cost cutting under Sir Jim Ratcliffe since he became minority owner back in 2024.

According to the filing, United made three further withdrawals from its revolving credit facility, on July 29, July 31 and August 28, totalling £120m, before paying back £30m on September 21.

That brings United's total debt to £1.15 billion, made up of £578m in historic debt, £200m still owed on the revolving credit facility, and £375m in outstanding transfer fees. The transfer fee figure is actually down £72m from the £447m reported owed in last year's accounts, though it remains substantial, with £104.8m due within one to two years and £51.9m due between two and five years, and the rest due within the next 12 months.

United say payments related to their most recent signings are due to be spread out over the next five years.
