Real Madrid Receive Major Boost as Eder Militao Cleared to Return After Five Months Out
Real Madrid have received a welcome boost at the back, with Eder Militao finally cleared to return to action after five months on the sidelines.
According to Marca, the Brazilian defender has successfully passed his final physical assessment, marking a key step in his recovery. The clearance followed a visit to Valdebebas from Dr Lasse Lempainen, the Finnish specialist who performed Militao's surgery earlier this year, who was in Madrid to personally oversee the final stage of his rehabilitation.
Dr Lempainen shared his satisfaction with the progress made, posting on social media afterwards. "Great day in Madrid with @edermilitao and the medical and performance staff of @realmadrid. A full day dedicated to his return as Éder continues to progress according to plan following surgery for his severe tendon injury," he wrote. "It was a pleasure for us to contribute our expertise and experience to his return to play process, with the ultimate goal of helping him safely return and perform again at the highest level. Many thanks to Éder and all of the Real Madrid staff for the excellent collaboration and a very successful day. Returning to the field is a milestone. Returning to your highest performance level is the goal."
The timing works out well for Real Madrid, given how much they've missed Militao's presence at the back. He hasn't featured in a competitive match since the 2-1 win over Alaves back on April 21, and his absence has forced Jose Mourinho to rely on a rotating cast of defensive combinations, sometimes using players out of position to cover the gap. His return is expected to bring much needed leadership and physicality back to the backline.
Even with medical clearance now given, the club is expected to bring him back carefully. Militao has already been seen doing intense training sessions on the pitch, showing the strength and mobility needed to compete at the top level, but he'll likely go through a tailored conditioning program before being fully reintegrated, with the aim of having him ready to contribute during the busy October fixture schedule.
His recent injury is part of a much longer run of fitness problems stretching back over the past three seasons. In total, Militao has been sidelined for close to 800 days since the start of the 2023-24 campaign. It started with a serious ACL tear in his left knee that kept him out for 231 days, before he suffered a complete ACL rupture in his right knee, along with meniscus damage, which required a further 255 days of rehabilitation. His most recent setback came on April 28, 2026, when he underwent surgery for a severe proximal hamstring tendon injury that required roughly five months to recover from. Altogether, he has suffered eight separate injuries since 2023, adding up to 781 days out of action.
His return matters beyond club level too. With major international tournaments approaching, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti will be watching Militao's fitness and form closely, given how central he is considered to Brazil's defensive setup. A fully fit Militao is seen as a genuine asset for both club and country as the 2026-27 season progresses.
