Nations League Roundup: Finland Run Riot, England Fall to Spain
There was a goal glut in Group 1, a hard-fought draw for Scotland's new era, and a big result for England as the Nations League programme continued across the continent.
The standout scoreline of the round came in Group 1, where Finland thrashed San Marino 7-0. Joel Pohjanpalo helped himself to a hat-trick, including a late penalty, while Fredrik... well, the goals kept coming from all angles, with Anssi Suvanbäck, Benjamin Källman and a brace from L. Walta rounding out the rout. San Marino also finished the game with ten men after Golinucci was sent off just after the hour.
In the same group, Switzerland beat North Macedonia 3-0 away, with Zeki Amdouni scoring twice either side of a Remo Freuler strike, and Albania beat Belarus 2-0 at home, Kristjan Asllani converting a first-half penalty before Ernest Muçi added a second right on half time.
There was also a goalless draw in the group, as Scotland and Slovenia couldn't find a way through in Ljubljana, a result that came alongside a much-improved second-half showing for Sebastien Pocognoli's new-look side after a sluggish first 45 minutes.
There was late drama at Wembley in Group 3 as England were beaten 3-2 by World Cup holders Spain. Spain struck first through Lamine Yamal after just two minutes, but England turned the game around with goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane in the space of four minutes to lead 2-1 at half-time. Spain responded after the break, with substitute Álex Baena levelling in the 60th minute before Mikel Oyarzabal completed the comeback with the winner 14 minutes later.
In the same group, Croatia beat Czech Republic 2-1. Luka Modrić gave Croatia the lead early in the second half, before Adam Karabec levelled for Czech Republic. Croatia then restored their lead through Marco Pašalić to seal the win.
Elsewhere in the group, Slovakia beat Moldova 2-0 at home thanks to a first-half goal from Ivan Schranz and a penalty from Ondrej Duda, while the Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan shared the points in a 1-1 draw.
Group 4 also produced two tight results, with Iceland and Estonia drawing 1-1 after Andri Guðjohnsen's first-half goal was cancelled out by Maksim Paskotši.
Meanwhile, Luxembourg came from behind to beat Bulgaria 2-1, with Bulgaria's early lead through Asen Chandarov overturned by second-half goals from Leandro Barreiro and Vincent Thill.
